Marc Rayner, the company’s owner, has been a certified public accountant for 18 years. He began working in auditing and finance nearly 20 years ago, and quickly discovered that his true passions were helping individuals and small businesses.
Throughout the years, he found that many individuals and small businesses are stuck using big box chain accountants, and these companies don’t always meet clients’ needs.
“Larger firms tend to be too big for the smaller guy,” Rayner said. “The smaller guys don’t really know where to go.”
He opened Rayner & Associates to provide clients with more personalized services than the chain companies can offer, and prides himself on the fact that his company makes accounting and taxes understandable for the average person.
“The biggest compliment I receive is, ‘Wow, I can’t believe how easy that was,’” Rayner said.
Rayner, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, opened the company in Midtown Manhattan in 2009. Shortly after, he personally relocated to Central Jersey.
“I moved to Hamilton to escape the city life,” he said. “There’s so much growth in Central N.J., and it’s a great place to live. It’s the home of a lot of small businesses.”
He decided to open a second branch of the accounting firm in his new hometown.
“When I found Hamilton and I found the small businesses, I thought it would be a great place to set up an office, as well,” he said.
Rayner hopes to continue to grow his clientele in the two locations he currently owns, but in the future, has his sights set on a possible further expansion.
“Down the line I could potentially see myself having another satellite office—maybe in Philadelphia,” he said.
Rayner & Associates provides small businesses with accounting and bookkeeping services and offers investment help, but the company’s most popular service is tax preparation.
“We specialize in it,” Rayner said. “We help people find things they haven’t thought of to save on their taxes.”
Rayner noted that many people are confused with the new tax rates that go into effect.
“We can help make sense out of the upcoming changes in tax laws that are taking place next year,” he said.
Rayner & Associates offers a free consultation, and all clients are able to file their tax returns for free. The company also offers the option of communicating electronically, and can schedule online video meetings for clients who cannot go to the office.
After nearly two decades as an accountant, Rayner is still excited to be able to provide accounting services to his company’s many clients.
“I get to help people,” Rayner said. “I help take the stress away. People can focus on living their lives without worrying that they’re being audited.”
