Literacy Volunteers of Mercer County is looking for volunteer tutors.
LVMC’s mission is to help adults learn to read, write and speak English.
LVMC executive director Cheryl Kirton said funding was reduced by 40 percent over the last five years which has resulted in a cut back of their free tutoring service. Kirton said the organization is forced to turn illiterate adults away.
To combat the lack of funds and tutors LVMC organized two tutor training sessions for potential volunteers.
“Some people think they don’t know enough to tutor someone else,” Kirton said, “yet tutors need only be 18 years or older, have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent.” She said no foreign language, education training or college is required.
Both sessions are set to begin Feb. 13 and meet for five weeks. The daytime session is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and evening session 6 to 9 p.m. and
