Plainsboro Mayor Peter Cantu released a statement on the closing of Superfresh and the general condition of Plainsboro Plaza:
Plainsboro Township has had an ongoing dialogue with the owners of the Plainsboro Plaza Shopping Center, TIAA-Cref, over the last several years. The township initiated this dialogue with the owners out of concern over the status of the center and its growing list of vacancies. Several years ago TIAA-Cref informed us that they were preparing plans for improvements to the center that would enhance their ability to lease space. These plans never materialized and instead, they decided to market the property for sale. The property was placed on the market in 2012.
In the wake of the closing of Superfresh, we met with a representative of TIAA-Cref to press them to find another grocery store for the center. At that meeting, we were assured that outreach to other grocery stores by the owner is ongoing.
While the township has no legal authority to compel the owners to find another grocery store, we are pressing them to the greatest extent possible to do so. However, the township is investigating any options it may have to affect changes at the center that will improve the long-term future of Plainsboro Plaza.
The citizens of Plainsboro need and should have a full service grocery store in town. They are rightfully concerned about the loss of Superfresh. Township officials will continue to closely monitor the situation and aggressively advocate on behalf of Plainsboro and its citizens.
