Westminster’s Jubilee Singers and Symphonic Choir set to perform

The Westminster Jubilee Singers and Taione Martinez will present a concert entitled “His Light Still Shines” on February 16, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in Bristol Chapel on the campus of Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton N.J.

Westminster Choir College has concerts scheduled for Feb. 16 and 17.

Westminster’s Jubilee Singers are set to present His Light Still Shines: A Music Tribute to DREAM at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at Bristol Chapel on the college’s Princeton campus, 101 Walnut Lane, Princeton.

The program features modern works by African-American composers, including Roland Carter, Damon H. Dandridge, Nathan Carter and John W. Work. The singers will perform Moses Hogan’s tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., His Light Still Shines.

Taione K. Martinez is conducting the performance. Martinez is a member of Westminster’s Sacred Music faculty and the director of music at Queen of All Saints Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Jubilee Singers is an ensemble of students part of the Sacred Music department. The group is modeled after Tennessee’s Fisk University Jubilee Singers, who are credited with bringing “slave songs” to public in 1871.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.

The Westminster Symphonic Choir is set perform 3 p.m. Feb. 17 at Princeton Meadow Church and Event Center, 545 Meadow Road, West Windsor.

The concert is titled Requiem; the ensemble is set to perform pieces titled Requiem by Gabriel Fauré and W.A. Mozart.

The ensemble will be conducted by graduate students Elizabeth Hermanson and Anna Lenti with accompaniment from organists Brian Schoettler and Pauline Worusski and the Westminster Festival Orchestra.

Hermanson is a second year graduate student in choral conducting at Westminster. Before attending Westminster, she conducted middle and high school choirs in Minnesota and Wisconsin She also performed with The Singers – Minnesota Choral Artists.

Lenti is also a second year graduate student at Westminster. She graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance. She has performed with a Rochester, N.Y. vocal ensemble, Voices, and the Manhattan Concert Chorale in New York City.

The Westminster Symphonic Choir is composed of all Westminster’s juniors and seniors and half of the graduate students. The ensemble’s 2012-2013 season includes performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the London Philharmonia conducted by Esa Pekka Salonen and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.
