Community Agriculture
Appelget Farm has expanded its community supported agriculture program started in 2009. Memberships are sold to community members in return for a “share” of the growing season’s bounty of fresh produce, herbs, and flowers from June through October.
Shares include a broad selection of items which vary from week to week. Popular favorites such as lettuces, squash, and tomatoes, as well as lesser known varieties often inspire members to try something new. Most of the items are harvested for members but there are several pick your own crops such as peas, green beans, and herbs.
The area is a 10-acre preserved farm on Conover Road in West Windsor. Soybeans, wheat, barley, potatoes, and corn have been cultivated by the four generations of the Appelget family. Owners Kevin and Lori Appelget have a deep desire to continue the family’s farming tradition to help people connect with the land and understand where their food comes from.
Farm member volunteer days offer a chance to actively participate in the farm and learn a little bit more about farming. While all members are encouraged to participate, work days are not mandatory. Member events like the volunteer days and the end of season potluck provide the opportunity to meet others in the community with a shared interest in farming and fresh food.
Full shares are $600. Half shares are $340. During the growing season, members find little need to purchase fresh produce, herbs, or cut flowers from the grocery store and tend to reallocate part of their grocery budget rather than view it as an additional expense. Members are asked to pay for the entire season up front as payment is used to purchase seeds, equipment, fencing, fertilizer, and supplies starting at the beginning of the season.
