With the dramatic announcement that Pope Benedict XVI was set to resign as Pope on Feb. 28, the world will once again witness the centuries old process of the election of the successor of Saint Peter. Dr. Christopher Bellitto, Associate Professor of History at Kean University and Papal historian will give a presentation on this process, Monday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of Saint Ann, 1253 Lawrenceville Road in Lawrenceville.
“Picking the Pope” will outline the history and manner in which the Roman Catholic Church has selected the Bishop of Rome and the Vicar of Christ on earth.
Bellitto is Chair and Associate Professor of History at Kean University in Union, and the Academic Editor at Large of Paulist Press. His own most recent books include 101 Questions and Answers on Popes and the Papacy, Church History 101, and the companion volumes Renewing Christianity and The General Councils. His articles have appeared in the Catholic Historical Review, Church History, America, and other journals. He is also a frequent public speaker and media commentator.
