The Yuan Yuan Group celebrated the start of the Chinese Year of the Snake at several places around Mercer County in March.
The group often organizes programs such as Chinese singing, dancing, instrument performances, oriental tribal fashion shows, tai-chi drills and art exhibitions with the goal of introducing the traditional Chinese culture to the local community.
Yuan Yuan Group presented an exhibition of works 17 professional and amateur artists at the Lawrence Township Branch of the Mercer County Public Library from March 4 to 17. Artwork included sculpture, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese knot craft, bonsai,and painting.
On March 20, the group led a presentation called Honoring Mothers in the spring time at the Lawrence Senior Center, which honored there RED -retired and extremely dynamic- mothers, Mildred Hillman, Simone Chu and Livia Borkowski during the presentation.
At 105 years of age, Hillman is independent and agile. She was joined by her granddaughter during the show.
Frequent senior center participant, Borkowski is 91 years old. She has five children, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Chu, also known as Mama Chu, is 92 years old. She and her husband regularly join the line dancing class held at the senior center.
Cheng How Mao hosted the presentation that opened with a dragon and lion dance, followed by the chorus singing a classic Chinese song “Mother is the best.” Lyrics of the song were translated into English and distributed to the audience.
