As one component of the WW-P school district’s initiative to review and revise its safety procedures, the district will implement a three-month Eyes on Doors (EOD) pilot program at Village and Millstone upper elementary schools. The program is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 15, and will run through the end of the school year, at which point administrators will evaluate if it should be adopted permanently throughout the district.
Highlights of the program include a designated “greeter” at school entrances to handle visitors, who may be asked to show identification.
Deputy Superintendent David Aderhold sent district parents a letter advising them of the EOD program. Excerpts from his letter follow:
“Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, we all have become more aware of the need to review and reconsider safety and security measures for school buildings. While the West Windsor Plainsboro Regional School District has as a well-prepared “Crisis Management Plan” and memorandums of agreement with the Plainsboro Police and the West Windsor Police, we know that in light of the devastating event at Sandy Hook, we needed to evaluate WW-P school security measures,” the letter said.
“At its meeting last month, the Board of Education included $1 million in the 2013-’14 budget to support security enhancements throughout all schools. Some of these security enhancements include improvements to classroom door safety, internal cameras, upgraded intercom systems, additional radios, and greater signage. Additional enhancements are being studied, and we anticipate decisions being made this summer. Another important step in enhanced safety is the understanding of the guidelines to be used by parents and visitors when entering a school building.
