Superstorm no sweat for tree specialists

Juan Vargas, owner of Above Ground Tree Service, didn’t start out in the tree business. Actually, he began his career with a landscaping company. As business grew, more and more requests were coming in for tree work. In 1995, he decided to branch out.

Now, Vargas owns three different companies under the Vargas Property Doctors umbrella. These three companies cover his three divisions of work: tree service, landscaping and construction.

“We have different divisions with groups of people who specialize in each category,” Vargas said. “The Above Ground crew people are related to the mother company, which is Vargas Property Doctors, but as far as the work goes, the specialized crews attend only to the work within their division.”

Much like the other divisions, the crew at Above Ground Tree Service is highly trained and qualified in the work they do. Vargas said his crew has been doing tree work for 15-20 years. Some of them, he said, have even gone to school and taken training courses to be better prepared for their field.

“They have worked for very prestigious companies in the area,” Vargas said. “They have a great amount of experience.

Besides having a very experienced staff, Vargas said another reason Above Ground Tree Service stand out among the rest is because of their reliability.

“We always do what we say we’re going to do, and that’s an important aspect of our business,” Vargas said.

Above Ground Tree Service takes pride in being a highly referred company. Vargas said most of their business comes from referrals. He said the crew is comfortable and confident in their quality of work.

Besides providing high quality work by experienced tree service experts, Vargas said most of their success is due to their customers.

“The reason that we’ve been not only afloat in hard economic times, but successful, is due to our customers,” Vargas said. “We appreciate their support and their trust. In times when other companies have been down, we’ve been booming. I feel good that we’re doing our part, but I can’t overlook all those people who have supported us and called on us over and over again for jobs during difficult times.”

Above Ground Tree Service did their part to show their thanks and give back to the community in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

“From a business point of view, you could say Sandy was a blessing,” Vargas said. “I say that because it provided a lot of work, but overall, to us, Sandy was a great opportunity to give back and help people who were distressed and overcome by physical situations like tree damage and power outages. It was a chance for us to step out of the business circle and help the community.”

Vargas recalled a call he received a by a Ewing resident affected by Sandy.

“He had a situation where he had numerous; big trees fall in his backyard,” Vargas said. “Unfortunately, he couldn’t file in a claim because he didn’t suffer any structural damage. We offered him a financial program out of trust. This was an old guy that didn’t have credit cards or anything like that. We went in there and helped him out by offering him a plan where he could make smaller payments over a period of time. We just like to help people, and I think people sense that. “We’re here, yes, to make a living, but also to keep our prices reasonable and help people out. We try to go that extra mile for our clients.”

Vargas is going the extra mile for his clients both here in Mercer County, and miles and miles away in his home country of Costa Rica. When Vargas travels home, it’s for a combination of two reason: recreation and business.

“I go out to see relatives and people who I don’t see that often, but at the same time, I have some business down in Costa Rica,” Vargas said. “Majority of the work I do there is on the construction side. I’m a construction expert, and I develop some properties down there. We also get into landscaping, and though Costa Rica isn’t as tree populated as we are here, we do a little bit of tree work down there as well.”

Vargas loves what he does for many reasons. He loves working outdoors, he loves establishing relationships with his clients and he loves helping people out. More than anything, however, Vargas loves the reaction to a finished product.

“Optimally, I love seeing the happy face on my clients at the end,” Vargas said.
