Hawaiian dance, Taek Kwon Do and Arabic name writing among the many cultural displays set for the Eighth Annual Diversity/Culture Day.
Lawrence Township Human Relations Committee and Lawrence Township School District are set to host the event 12 to 4 p.m. May 5 at Lawrence High School, 2525 Princeton Pike, Lawrenceville.
Actress and playwright Naomi de la Puerta is this year’s keynote speaker. De la Puerta is one of the founding members of Dramatic Question Theatre’s multicultural and multi-generational company of writers.
The program also features The Kuulei’s Hawaiian Dancers presenting their traditional dance ,The Irish Dancers performing Irish River Dance and a Taek Kwon Do demonstration.
Jorge Torres is set to present a short documentary about the plight of the undocumented immigrants. Michael Shiue will do Chinese calligraphy and The Chinese Language School will entertain with the Chinese yo-yo. Members of the Islamic Circle of Mercer County will do Henna hand painting and Arabic name writing
Musical performances are by The Bushwackers Drum & Bugle Corps and The Church of Saint Ann’s “12:30 Mass Band.”
The Lawrence High School International Alliance will participate along with GEPNA, HomeFront and the Eggerts Crossing Civic League among other organizations.
Additionally, there will be a children’s corner with face-painting.
The Human Relations Committee’s goal is to help the Township of Lawrence celebrate its diversity and to advise the Town Council on cultural affairs. The Committee recommends and evaluates programs to increase cultural awareness and promote harmony between the diverse cultures.
