Mercer County Professional Counselors Association recognized high school students 27th annual Caring Awards Breakfast April 16th at Mercer County Community College.
Students were honored for their deeds of kindness, respect, service to others and acts of caring. Counselors from local high schools honored the students by sharing the projects they completed and presenting them with an award at the breakfast ceremony.
Nottingham High School student Alicia Mitchko was recognized for her commitment to Girls Scouts and creation of the program “Sweets for Soldiers.”
Through this program, Mitchko baked and shipped baked goods to soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq to show them support and remind them that someone is thinking of them back home.
Notre Dame High School student Victoria Binz was honored for her dedication to their community service program, where she logged many hours working on different projects, such as Special Olympics.
Binz worked with Kohl’s Cares to donate hundreds of books to shelters, nurseries, and schools around the area for students in need.
Robbinsville High School student Julia Karlin was acknowledged for logging more than 600 hours through programs such as Home Front, AmeriCorps, Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and One Simple Wish. Also, she founded the program “People Helping People.”
West Windsor-Plainsboro South student Anthony Colonna received an award for serving as a director for the Pirate Players. He was asked to continue his role with Pirate Athletics by becoming the freshmen basketball coach.
Unlike the other schools, Foundation Collegiate Adcademy, which will graduate its first class next year, honored an underclassman. Whitney Gittens was honored for standing out among her peers.
Additionally, Hamilton West chose an underclassman. Sophomore Fabiola Garcia was recognized for standing up to bullying by reaching out to reached out to Mercer County Freeholder Pat Colavita for help,
West Windsor-Plainsboro North junior, Manuela Contreras was acknowledged for her contributions to Peer Leaders and Kids for Kids as a role model and leader. She also organized a Hurricane Sandy relief campaign by collecting food and supplies for victims.
