Princeton Symphony Orchestra presents a masterclass with violinist Cho-Liang Lin on Saturday, May 4, at Princeton Theological Seminary. Three violinists will have the chance to be coached by one of the international artists appearing as a guest soloist of the orchestra, and two of the performers are students in West Windsor and Plainsboro.
Tiffaney Hsia, a freshman at High School South, will play Tzigane by Maurice Ravel. Concertmaster of the String Ensemble at South, she has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kimmel Center, and on recital stages worldwide.
Hsia, born in Pittsburgh, moved to West Windsor with her family 10 years ago. She began her music studies at the age of four with viola lessons from Eugene Phillips, a former Pittsburgh Symphony violinist and Carnegie Mellon University faculty member. Hsia is also a respected musician in viola, piano, and flute performance.
Soyeong Park, a sophomore at High School North, will play a movement from the Sibelius Violin Concerto. She debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Charles Dutoit as a winner of the 2009 Albert M. Greenfield Competition. She has also served as concertmaster of the New Jersey All-State Intermediate Orchestra and the CJMEA High School Regional Orchestra.
Born in Korea, Park moved to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, with her family when she was six. They moved to West Windsor when she was 10. Park has been playing violin since she was three.
Lin appears as soloist with orchestras of Detroit, Toronto, Dallas, Houston, Nashville, and San Diego; Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra; in Europe with the Bergen Philharmonic, Stockholm Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, and the English Chamber Orchestra; and in Asia with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Singapore Symphony, Malaysia Philharmonic, and Bangkok Symphony. An advocate for contemporary music and an avid chamber musician, he is the music director of the La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest.
Musicians and music enthusiasts of all types will be fascinated by this glimpse into the process of refining major works from the violin repertoire for performance. Lin will offer these accomplished students new perspectives on the technical and artistic challenges of the virtuoso pieces they have chosen. He appears as soloist in Prokofiev Violin Concert No. 2 in G Minor with Princeton Symphony Orchestra “Silk Road Dances,” on Sunday, May 5.
