Judith Persichilli
Catholic Health East (CHE) and Trinity Health took another important step toward consolidating into a stronger national health ministry by announcing two interim top executives for the new organization as well as naming 12 new members to the new board of directors.
The boards and sponsors named Judith Persichilli, R.N., B.S.N., M.A., CHE president and chief executive officer, to be the interim president and CEO of the new organization and Larry Warren, Trinity Health interim chief executive officer, to be the interim chief operating officer.
Persichilli became president and CEO of CHE in May 2010, after six years of service to the organization in roles including executive vice president of the system’s Mid-Atlantic Division, executive vice president of acute care and executive vice president and chief operating officer. Before that, she served for eight years as CEO at CHE-affiliate St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton, N.J.
Warren has served on the Trinity Health Board since July 2011 and most recently served as the president and CEO at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He worked for the University of Michigan for 29 years in various administrative capacities, including, for the last 10 years, as the CEO of the University’s Hospital System.
The new board of directors for the new organization will be composed of six members from the CHE board, six members from the Trinity Health board and three new members who do not serve on either board and will be appointed at a later date. The CHE and Trinity members are James D. Bentley, Ph.D., former senior vice president, strategic policy planning, American Hospital Association, Silver Spring, Maryland; Joseph Betancourt, M.D., director, The Disparities Solutions Center at Massachusetts General Hospital and senior scientist, Mongan Institute for Health Policy; Sr. Suzanne Brennan, C.S.C., executive director, Holy Cross Ministries, Salt Lake City, Utah; Melanie Dreher, Ph.D., R.N., dean, College of Nursing, Rush University, Chicago, Ill.; Mary Catherine Karl, C.P.A., principal, Surgical Safety Institute, Tampa, Fla.; Sr. Mary Mollison, C.S.A., vice president of ministry and spirituality, Agnesian Health Care, Fond du Lac, Wis.; George M. Phillip, president emeritus, University at Albany, State University of New York, Albany, N.Y.; Sr. Kathleen Popko, S.P., president, Sisters of Providence, Holyoke, Massachusetts; Stanley T. Urban, chair, Hope Ministries, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania; Roberta Waite, Ed.D., associate professor of nursing and assistant dean of faculty integration and evaluation of community programs, Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Sr. Linda Werthman, R.S.M., adjunct social work associate professor, University of Detroit Mercy, Livonia, Mich.; and Sr. Barbara Wheeley, R.S.M., CHE Sponsors Council coordinator.
The consolidation of CHE and Trinity Health will create a health system that serves people in 21 states from coast to coast with 82 hospitals, 89 continuing care facilities and home health and hospice programs that provide nearly 2.8 million visits annually. More than 87,000 employees, including 4,100 employed physicians, will provide care in the new system. The new system will have annual operating revenues of about $13.3 billion and assets of about $19.3 billion, and will return almost $1 billion to its communities annually in the form of charity care and other programs.
