The time has come once again for residents of Lawrence Township to band together in the fight against cancer.
Now for the fourth year, Lawrence High School will host the American Cancer SocietyRelay for Life of Lawrence Township on Friday, May 17 at 4:30 p.m. The event raises awareness of cancer, and proceeds from the event support the American Cancer Society’s mission of fighting back against cancer, finding cures and helping people stay well.
“Many of our staff, students, family members, friends and community members have been affected by [cancer], either personally or as a caregiver,” Rebecca Gold, co-chair of the Relay, wrote in an email. “The more awareness and education about healthy living we can bring to the [forefront], the better we can continue to the fight and provide early detection.”
Gold, the director of personnel, professional development and administrative services for Lawrence Township Public Schools, has served as co-chair for every Relay since the event began in Lawrence Township. As is the case for many in the community, several of Gold’s friends and colleagues have had cancer in their lives.
Each team participating in the Relay will have a member on the track at LHS walking at all times. In addition, there will be other activities occurring for team members and children, including games and a DJ.
“We have a torch run … that goes through all the buildings throughout the school day and each of the school has an activity plan during the day,” Gold said, adding that the final leg of the torch run will be the opening lap at the Relay for Life.
Individual teams will be provided a site on the event grounds to set up tents, tables and chairs. Each team is encouraged to decorate their space with signs and banners, and also to bring food and drinks.
“Our goal is to bring awareness to the community and to teach the LTPS about healthy living and the importance of community services,” Gold said.
Gold said the school hopes to raise $70,000 from this year’s Relay for Life. Since the first Relay four years ago, Lawrence Township has raised approximately $265,000 and seen some 1,800 people participate. Those figures include registrations for this year.
