Many people came to the podium at the May 14 Board of Education meeting to offer well wishes to Robert Johnson, leaving the board after nine years of service. Among the highlights:

Former board member Diane Hasling: “When I was leaving the board, I wanted a good member to take my place. I couldn’t have asked for a better successor. You have been a wonderful board member. Thanks for all you have done for the district, and its students.”

West Windsor Council member and former board member Linda Geevers: “Thank you for all of your hard work — all that you have done. You have made a difference in a child’s life. What an accomplishment. And thanks to your family for sharing all of your time as a board member.”

Randy Tucker, former board member: “We worked on the board together. Bob was a researcher. He looked into every issue. He read every word of the packets we received. He was the only one who ever did that. He was so well versed and knowledgeable on so many issues. The most important thing I learned about Bob was that he held up under pressure and he was fun to be around.”

John Farrell, former board member: “Bob was an incredible recruiter. He told me that working on the board would take just a couple of hours a week. ‘Join the finance committee,’ he said. ‘It’s not much work!’ Boy was I fooled! But I thank him for my decision to serve on the board. It was one of the best things I have done, especially because I was working with Bob. He is all about the kids. His focus was always on quality of education.”

Outgoing Superintendent Victoria Kniewel: “Bob has always been thorough, articulate, detailed, and focused. He enjoyed statistics, and I have prepared some about him: He hired two superintendents, five assistant superintendents, principals at seven out of our ten schools, participated in three negotiations, worked on ten budgets, the implementation of the harassment, intimidation, and anti-bullying policy, school safety issues, obtaining field lights at both high schools, and so much more. You have made such a positive difference in so many metrics of school success.”

Board President Hemant Marathe: “I thank him on so many levels. One of his first decisions was to elect me as president of the board — and then he refused to take the position from me! One of the jobs of the vice president is to do whatever the president is too lazy to do. He always did it, and did it well with no complaints. Bob is honest, independent, seasoned, and knowledgeable. He always said things for the good of the schools and the community, and he will be greatly missed.”

Johnson’s closing remarks: “When I look back at myself nine years ago, I am embarrassed by how I much I thought I knew. I have learned so much since then. One thing that is important for board members is just like doctors: Your first responsibility is to do no harm. Slow down, think things over before jumping into decisions. Nothing will happen if you wait to make a decision to consider all of the facts. I am glad I served. Attending board meetings, being a part of the board, gave me the chance to get to know some intelligent and interesting people. Thank you all.”
