22nd annual JazzFeast set for Sept. 15

The 22nd annual JazzFeast is scheduled for Sept. 15 in Palmer Square.

The open-air festival features performances by some of the industry’s best jazz musicians and showcases cuisine from local restaurants.

The event is set to take place from 12 to 6 p.m., rain or shine, on the Palmer Square Green.

Princeton University Jazztet is scheduled to kick off the festival from 12 to 1 p.m.

The Jazztet is an ensemble of the university’s jazz program students directed by Anthony D.J. Branker. Members of the group include alto saxophonist James Bartusek, tenor saxophonist Jacob Shulman, pianist Spencer Caton, bassist Austin Gengos and drummer Arjun Dube.

Alan Dale and the New Legacy Jazz Band is scheduled to make its 22nd consecutive appearance at JazzFeast from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m.

The New Legacy Jazz Band performs at festivals, weddings, corporate and other private receptions, casinos, colleges and theatres throughout the mid-Atlantic states. Honoring a heritage of genius in American popular music, the band is dedicated to the highest standards of artistic elegance and professional excellence.

Mark Shane Trio with Holli Ross is scheduled for 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Jazz pianist Mark Shane developed his solo style as house pianist in New York’s “Eddie Condon’s” jazz club. He has played with Benny Goodman, Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate.

Shane has also played jazz piano on Grammy Award winning soundtracks for many films and TV productions including The Cotton Club and HBO’s TV series Boardwalk Empire.

Holli Ross has performed in top clubs from New Orleans’ Snug Harbor to NY’s Blue Note. A published ASCAP lyricist, her songs have been recorded by jazz artists, Janice Seigel with the Count Basie Orchestra, Mark Murphy and Meredith D’Ambrosio. Ross has also recorded several CDs with her female vocal trio, String of Pearls.

Bucky Pizzarelli Quartet is scheduled for 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.

Paterson native John “Bucky” Pizzarelli’s career as a jazz guitarist spans more than 60 years. He has performed with Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Claude “Fiddler” Williams and Presidents Reagan and Clinton.

Bucky has cemented his place in music history. He was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2011 and has two guitars in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

Bria Skonberg Sextet is scheduled for 5 to 6 p.m.

Bria Skonberg hails from Chilliwack, B.C. and now resides in Brooklyn, N.Y. The trumpet player and vocalist is known for bringing a modern flair to traditional jazz. Skonberg was recently named a “Downbeat Rising Star” of 2013 and gained a nomination for “Up and Coming Artist of the Year” from the Jazz Journalists’ Association. Her debut album, So is the Day, rose to #7 on the National Jazz Charts.

The food at this event covers a global spectrum of choices; menus feature burgers, sausage sandwiches, pulled por, jerk chicken, samosas, pad Thai, paella and grilled clams.

Food vendors are set to include Blossom’s Catering, Buzzetta’s Festival Foods, Chez Alice Gourmet Café and Bakery, Da’s Kitchen, Jammin Crepes, Masala Grill, Mediterra, Mehek Fine Indian, Mistral, Princeton Soup & Sandwich Company, Teresa Caffe, Thomas Sweet Chocolates, Tico’s Eatery & Juice Bar, Tiger Noodles, Tiger’s Tale, Triumph Brewing Company, Whole Earth Center, Winberie’s and Yankee Doodle Tap Room.

Musical performances are free; food vendors charge accordingly.
