Along with new pencils, notebooks and folders, New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies and Attitudes in Reverse recommend students have a “mental health tool kit” for the first day of school.
Their workshop Back to School: Take a Breath–and Pack a Good Mental Health Tool Kit, is designed to show students ways to cope with stress and anxiety about entering a new school or college.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 10, which is also National Suicide Prevention Day. It will take place in the Department of Human Services’ first floor conference room, 222 South Warren St., Trenton
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death among high school students. A recent CDC survey revealed nearly one in six high school students has seriously considered suicide, and one in 12 has attempted suicide at least once.
During the event, AIR founders Tricia and Kurt Baker will describe their educational presentation, which they have delivered to more than 11,000 middle and high school students in New Jersey, as well as two colleges in New York. Their presentation is inspired by their son Kenny, who committed suicide following a long battle against severe depression and anxiety.
The Bakers and their daughter Kayelyn, aim to eliminate the stigma that prevents many for seeking treatment for mental health issues that may lead to suicide.
Additionally, a therapist from Cape Counseling Services and a youth who received services from this agency are set illustrate how the services enable youth to manage behavioral health disorders and achieve other goals, such as succeeding in school and building friendships. Cape Counseling is a NJAMHAA member in Cape May County.
Individuals from the Department of Human Services and the Department of Children and Family’s Youth Suicide Prevention Advisory Council may also to speak at the event.
NJAMHAA is a statewide trade association representing 180 providers of mental health care, addiction treatment and various support services, such as supported education and skill-development programs.
