The Mercer County Community College Athletics Department and MCCC Foundation are set to host the 22nd Annual Golf Classic on Oct. 1.

Proceeds from the tournament at Mercer Oaks East golf course are set to benefit MCCC’s Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund.

According to MCCC athletics director and assistant dean for student services John Simone, last year marked the largest list of student athletes receiving academic honors in his 16 years of service. He said every dollar from the fundraiser is used for scholarships.

The tournament features a shotgun start and scramble format. Skill prizes include hole-in-one, longest drives for men and women and closest-to-the-pin on four holes.

The practice range for tournament participants is set to open at 10:30 a.m. Registration and lunch begin at 11:30 a.m., with tee-off at 12:30 p.m.

The tournament is set to conclude at 5:30 p.m. with an cocktail reception, silent auction and awards dinner in the Mercer Oaks clubhouse.

The cost for a foursome is $800, twosomes are $400 and individual golfers are $200.

Tickets for the cocktail reception and awards dinner only are $100.

There are sponsorship opportunities starting at $5,000 for the main tournament sponsor and $2,500 for the front or back nine. Other opportunities include hole and tee sponsorships and beverage cart. Silent auction items and prize donations are also welcome.

Co-chairs for the event are MCCC trustee, Rev. William Coleman, and MCCC Foundation Board member Lori Danko. Committee members include Ehab Abousabe, Paul Fitzgerald, David Fraytak Sr., E. Karen Kennedy, Tom Kull, Tim Losch, Nina Melker, Scott Needham, Steve Ritzau and Tom Wilfrid.

The tournament is held in memory of Ritzau’s late wife, Dr. Cynthia Schaffer, who served on the MCCC Foundation Board and was an avid supporter of youth sports.
