In every edition of the Ewing Observer, Mayor Bert Steinmann answers readers’ questions, but since the dog days of summer are upon us, Observer has given residents an extra month to send in questions for the mayor. In their place, the mayor answered a few questions posed by the staff of the Observer — who was getting ready for a much-needed vacation of his own.
Does Ewing have any kind of noise ordinance in effect? Say someone’s neighbor is having a late night party and is blasting music loudly. What recourse do they have?
We do have a noise ordinance that was passed in June of 2011. The areas covered by this can be found in ordinance number 240-1, which can be viewed online at www.ecode360.com/9390418. The ordinance, which provides for a penalty of up to $3,000 for violations and covers noise from wrecking balls, machinery, mowers, blowers, music amplifiers, dogs and other sources. The ordinance set limits on the increase in total sound levels in a residential property, particularly between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weeknights and from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekend nights.
Ewing Township passed a bond ordinance in July allotting more than $2 million for capital improvement projects. Can you tell us what money will be used to fund?
About $1.6 million of the ordinance is being used to pay for improvements to town hall, which will up to date, both inside and outside, when they are completed. Improvements include: new boilers at town hall, replacing 22-year-old boilers; new electrical and mechanical improvements for the council room; security upgrades for the court room; handicapped upgrades to the front and back entrances to town hall (automatic door openers); installation of ceiling tiles; cleaning some carpets and replacing older carpets and painting and other spot repairs; and updating and balancing of the HVAC system.
Funds totaling $600,000 will be used to pave the following roads: Carolina Ave. Somerset St.; Sussex St., Fran Ave., Chauncey Ave., Hillside Ave, Esther Ave. Additionally we will be paving the lower half of Mountain View Rd. with a grant we received from the state DOT.
Other projects funded by the ordinance include: $120,000 for police vehicles to replace older vehicles; $40,000 for the Ewing Community Senior Center; $30,000 for the Hollow Brook Community Center; and $10,000 for a paper folding machine.
