September’s Women With a Purpose dinner is set to benefit the Ruble family from Hamilton, whose son was injured in a snowboarding accident.
Sixteen-year-old Thomas Ruble was injured in a snowboarding accident at Hunter Mountain in New York on April 4. He was found unconscious at the scene and flown by helicopter to Albany Medical Center.
Despite wearing a helmet, Ruble suffered from a traumatic brain injury. He spent 28 days, and three weeks in a coma, in the PICU in Albany.
During his hospital stay, Ruble’s parents lived in the hospital while family members cared for his brother (Jeffery, 15) and sister (Mary, 11).
On May 1, Ruble was deemed stable enough to be transferred to Kessler Rehabilitation Center in West Orange, where he was admitted to their severe disorder of consciousness program. He currently remains an inpatient at this facility.
Ruble’s continue to be at his bedside and participate actively in therapy treatments, including physical, occupational and speech therapy. Because the facility is about an hour away, one parent visits Ruble at Kessler while the other stays home with the other children.
Ruble’s parents are uncertain how long he will remain at Kessler. When he is release, Ruble will require outpatient therapy at home.
WWAP’s dinner to support the Ruble family is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept. 9 at Anna Rose Restaurant, 234 West Upper Ferry Road in Ewing.
The cost to attend is $20 per person and includes a full dinner buffet, dessert, soft drinks, iced tea, coffee or tea. Anna Rose Restaurant is set to offer specialty drink prices.
Participants must contribute at least $10 to be given to the Ruble family.
Outside contributions can be sent to Women With A Purpose, PO Box 74, Titusville, N.J., 08560. Checks should be made payable to Women With a Purpose and include “September 9th Dinner” in the memo section.
