The winter sports season is underway, with the ice hockey and swimming teams the first to compete. Both hockey teams are coming off of above-.500 seasons, and North currently sits at 1-4 while South is 4-1-1. Both squads are returning several key pieces, including South’s Jonathan Matthews, Matthew Sayde, Brian Tso, Steven Cangelosi and goalies Andrew Holubec and Patrick Tso; and North’s Greg Olsson and Garrett Weinberg.

South boys’ swimming ended the 2013 season with a seventh-place finish at the Mercer County Championship, while the girls finished fifth. The boys’ team is young after losing several veterans to graduation, but veterans like Adam Druckman lead the way for the Pirates. There are a lot of familiar faces returning for the girls, including Sydney Bornstein, Annie Menninger, Sarah Lattime, and Rabia Syed.

The Knight girls finished last season at 2-7 and earned a fifth-place finish at the Mercer County Championship. The boys ended the year at 9-2, placing third in the county and advancing to the Central Jersey Public A final, where they lost to Hunterdon Central.

The North and South winter track teams are poised for success once again after solid indoor, spring, and cross county seasons.

The South boys and girls placed second at last year’s winter county meet and followed up by capturing the Central Jersey Group III sectional titles. North’s girls won the county title and sent then-junior Patrycja Dziekonska to the Meet of Champions, where she took first place in the 55-meter hurdles, becoming the first female individual champion in school history.

Both schools’ boys’ basketball teams open their seasons on Friday, December 20. North, coming off of a disappointing year, plays a 4 p.m. game at Hopewell, while South travels to Nottingham at 5:30. The Pirates graduated several seniors last year, including 1,000-point scorer Bryan Rivers. The North girls play Hopewell at home at 4 p.m., while the South girls, led by new head coach Mika Ryan, face Nottingham at 5:30.

The North girls’ fencing squad advanced to the second round of the state playoffs last year, led by Katie Khaw and Elysia Wang, who also won the District 2 sabre title. Both are returning, so a repeat run is possible. Jeremy Kaish, Prashant Baliga, Mike Leung, Dillon Pine, and William Zhang are back for the boys, while freshman Amit Sarma is expected to make an impact.

On the South side, Stefano Luchetti is back on sabre after missing part of last season.
