Beauty and Support Day

Free hair cuts for cancer survivors will be offered on Tuesday, June 5, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Great Clips salons in Nassau Park, East Windsor, and Hamilton Marketplace. “Our three Great Clips Salons are participating in the Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day because we believe that volunteerism and community service are important to the success and growth of our business and the well-being of our community,” says Denise Schiera, a Great Clips salon owner and franchisee.

Denise and husband, Nick, live in West Windsor. Last year their three stores raised $3,000 for Children’s Miracle Network which directly benefits Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “We are delighted and privileged to take part in this special day for cancer survivors,” says Denise. West Windsor Lions Club is collecting clear or tinted prescription eyeglasses for Lions Recycle for Sight program, for distribution to the needy in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable or inaccessible. The eyeglasses brought to the Katzenbach School for the Deaf in Ewing, where they are cleaned, categorized by prescription, and prepared for distribution through international health organizations. Drop off boxes are at McCaffrey’s Supermarket, West Windsor Senior Center, West Windsor Library, and Village Elementary School, all in West Windsor.

Call for Art

Artsbridge invites artists from a 50-mile radius of New Hope, Pennsylvania, to submit paintings, watercolors, works on paper, mixed media, photography, digital, art, and sculpture for the 18th annual juried show from Friday, June 8 to Sunday, June 24, at 2 Stockton Avenue, New Hope. The jurors are painter Patrick Connors and Brian H. Peterson, curator at the James A. Michener Art Museum curator. Monmouth Museum invites photographers to enter the juried photography exhibition with work that represents contemporary photography that includes black and white images, color photographs, digital prints, and alternative processes. Must be 18 and up. Artwork will be considered through digital jpg submissions on a CD with a maximum of two per artist. Selected artwork must be wired, framed, and ready to hang. Mercer Friends seeks teen girls for the mini chef program to prepare food and snacks for Friendship Circle activities as well as prepare meals for home bound adults with special needs.

Adult Friendship Circle gives Jewish adults with special needs a social and Judaic network that promotes friendship. A monthly cooking circle that focuses on cooking and baking is free. A bowling club meets on Tuesday, June 12, at 6 p.m., at monthly at Brunswick Zone Carolier, 790 Route 1, North Brunswick at 6 PM.

We Care, a new campaign to promote the acceptance and awareness of individuals with special needs, seeks volunteers of teens and adults.

Shabbat In a Bag includes two challahs of your choice and a bottle of wine to keep or gift. All orders must be placed by Tuesday by noon for pickup in Princeton on Thursday evening. Kosher pareve under the supervision of Rabbi Shmuel Wilhelm. All proceeds benefit the Friendship Circle of Greater Mercer County. $18 with optional delivery in Princeton and surrounding areas.

Princeton Elks offers “Batter Up” baseball and softball hitting competition on Sunday, June 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is at the McKnight Baseball Complex, field H, Reading Boulevard, Belle Mead. Open to boys and girls, ages 5 to 15; and children with special needs, ages 5 to 18. Age is established by the contestants age on April 30. Woodlands Wildlife Refuge invites children in New Jersey, ages 6 to 11, to enter its first coloring contest to celebrate the true story of Broke Leg Bear, a cub that was rescued, treated, and released back into the wild by Woodlands. Prizes will be awarded in two categories, ages 6 to 8 and 9 to 11, and include a private tour of the refuge and an autographed copy of the newly-published “Broke Leg Bear Book.” Visit www.WoodlandsWildlife.org for rules and application. Woodlands Wildlife Refuge, a 501(c) 3 organization that handles close to 800 orphaned and injured wild animals each year, is the only facility in the state licensed to care for New Jersey’s black bear and endangered bobcat.

Blood Drive

American Red Cross seeks donors of platelets due to a decline in blood and platelet donations, as well as fewer people keeping their appointments. Platelet donors can donate up to 24 times per year. A single platelet donation equals about the same number of platelets collected in up to five whole blood donations. Platelets are only viable for transfusion for five days and the agency tries to maintain a three-day supply at all times. Individuals must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in good health may be eligible to donate blood. Scholarships

Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Greater Mercer offers two college scholarship opportunities available to Jewish students who reside in the community. Both, based on need for students accepted and enrolled in a college or university, with application deadlines of Friday, June 15. The Jewish Community Foundation offers book awards. The Melvin Kushner College Scholarship, awarded by the Abrams Foundation to a college bound Jewish high school, is $1000.

Auditions

Villagers Theater has auditions for “Spring Awakening” on Monday and Tuesday, May 28, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Teens ages 13 to 19 may audition with written consent of a parent of guardian due to the mature subject matter of the production. The show will not contain nudity. Also needed are an adult man and an adult women. Four ensemble members will be cast to sing in the pit, the audience, or act as an understudy. www.villagerstheatre.com.

Somerset Valley Players has auditions for “Dial M For Murder” on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 12 and 13, at 7 p.m., at 689 Amwell Road, Hillsborough. Performances are weekends, October 20 to November 4. The British thriller needs five adult men and 1 woman. English accents preferred but no necessary. Rehearsals will begin in late August. Educational Testing Service and YWCA Princeton will host the eighth annual Firecracker 5K Run/Walk on Tuesday, June 26 to benefit the YWCA Princeton Bilingual Nursery School, beginning at 6 p.m. Runners, walkers, families, and corporate or organizational teams are invited. This year’s race is dedicated to the memory of “Miss Patti” Preston, who founded the nursery school.

The course is slightly hilly. Water stops along the way. Awards will be given to winners in age-group categories: first, second, and third place, in five year increments through 80 plus. Winning corporate and organizational teams will receive special recognition in the post-race award ceremony. Participants will receive T-shirts, while they last. Keep Cool

Mercer County will team up with Medi-Cool Program to offer free air conditioners to qualified senior citizens and those with disabilities. Seniors age 60 and older with a documented health condition and who meet income eligibility requirements can receive a voucher that entitles them to a free air conditioner. Residents 18 years or older who have a disability may also qualify. All applicants must provide proof of residency, proof of income, prescriptions, and proof of assets. All registrations must be done in person.

Catholic Charities and Rise will screen applicants for eligibility through Friday, June 8, provide a voucher for an air conditioner, and arrange for clients to pick up the unit at 1125 George Street, Building R, Trenton. Reading Skills

Rutgers University Division of Continuing Studies will offer eight different reading skills programs for 4 year olds through adults. Tuition and materials fees vary by program level. Early summer session begins the week of June 18 and a late summer session begins the week of July 24. Programs are offered in Ewing, Princeton, and Mercerville.

Reading programs for younger students can build comprehension and students can learn the phonics and fluency skills they need to become strong readers. Programs for older students and adults are geared toward improving comprehension and study skills, vocabulary, and speed reading. The skills taught in the classes reinforce the importance of reading for pleasure and developing a lifelong love of books. Call 888-201-2448.
