On Wednesday, July 11, the state Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced a project to resurface sections of Route 1 in both directions from Plainsboro to North Brunswick. The main lanes on Route 1 will be repaved with a new surface of asphalt. Some roadway shoulders and access ramps will also be smoothed over and reconfigured.
Route 1 southbound will be resurfaced from the Route 91/Jersey Avenue interchange in North Brunswick to just north of the College Road interchange in Plainsboro. Route 1 northbound will be resurfaced from south of Ridge Road to just north of Raymond Road, and from the vicinity of Whispering Woods Boulevard to just north of Deans Lane in South Brunswick.
NJDOT’s contractor, Schifano Construction, is scheduled to start preliminary construction activities including site mobilization and sign installation by Monday, July 23.
The first step of the project includes shoulder closures along Route 1. Mainline resurfacing operations are scheduled to begin at the end of July. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2013 and is estimated to cost $8.5 million.
Work requiring lane closures will be performed at night to minimize traffic impacts. The DOT says access to businesses and residences along the highway will be maintained throughout construction.
The intersection of Route 1 and New Road in South Brunswick will be reconfigured to relieve traffic congestion turning off of Route 1. New Road will be widened east of Route 1, and the local roadway will be restriped to provide an additional travel lane in either direction. Traffic signal modifications will be made at the intersection as well.
Transportation Commissioner James Simpson said “this concentrated effort to repair the deficient roadway on Route 1 in these locations will go a long way in providing a safer and smoother ride for tens of thousands of motorists passing through here each day.”
