There was a unique family and friend gathering in Plainsboro to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the U.S. Marines landing at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on August 7, 1942. Nick Stevenson, Harry Anderson, and James Wagner all took part in the landing and combat at Guadalcanal.
Stevenson, 94, is a resident of Princeton Windrows. He was in command of C Company, 1st Marine Regiment, and was awarded the Silver Star for valor on Guadalcanal for leading a bayonet charge on the banks of the Tenaru River, the first offensive action of Americans in World War II.
Anderson, a former resident of Windrows, died several years ago. His wife, Patty, still lives at Princeton Windrows and was at the commemoration. Wagner traveled from North Carolina for the event.
Their family and friends shared a reunion dinner in the main dining room. An honor guard, a planned surprise for the gentlemen, was present.
