The West Windsor Republican Club will unofficially kick off the 2012 campaign season by presenting a discussion on one of the main issues that will sway voters in the presidential election — the state of the U.S. economy.
Elizabeth C. Bogan, senior lecturer in economics at Princeton University, will be the keynote speaker at the club’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 12, at 7 p.m. in the activity room of the West Windsor Senior Center, 271 Clarksville Road. James Solloway of Monroe Drive in West Windsor will serve as the moderator for the event. Marshall Lerner, president of the West Windsor Republican Club, spoke about how the event was initiated.
“Within the club we talk about what role we should have. We have a responsibility to help the community be informed of issues so that they can be more informed voters,” he said.
Lerner said the club wanted to find an economics expert. Mosho, who handles the Republican Club’s public relations, suggested reaching out to Princeton University. According to Lerner, Dr. Bogan responded to the request and said “she’d love to do it.”
Lerner added that the club does not worry about whether or not its topics help promote a Republican theme. “What we worry about is if a subject is relevant and if we’re doing a service to the community. We held one on Windsor Plaza’s redevelopment [on May 9] where we had the Cyzners [the owners of the property] come in, and that was not political. It was just a discussion of what was going on in the community,” Lerner said.
Another topic recently presented by the Republican Club was healthcare reform. A former candidate for the West Windsor-Plainsboro Board of Education, Peter Abitanto of Brown & Brown Benefit Advisors, moderated a panel discussion centered around changes due to “Obamacare.”
