Tips for Minimizing Storm Damage

Hurricane Irene brought not only widespread neighborhood flooding but caused significant damage to trees on many home sites in West Windsor and the Princetons. The following five guidelines –– drawn in part from a recent bulletin of the New Jersey Shade Tree Federation –– may help residents understand how they can mitigate tree damage from future storms and become aware of what to do when they have to deal with fallen branches or an uprooted tree.

1. Pre-Storm Prevention: Periodic inspection of trees may reveal defects that could result in damage from high winds or heavy snow. Visible decay or dead branches are symptoms that merit seeking the advice of a qualified arborist. An already-leaning tree is likely to be a victim of the next storm.

2. Post-Storm Repairs: After a storm, residents should promptly assess its effects on their property. Safety is the primary concern. Fallen branches or a tree may have brought down live power lines or ruptured theirs or a neighbor’s roof. Never touch or prune a branch that is within 10 feet of a live power line. Leave it to the utility company or a certified arborist. Hanging branches are likely to fall with post-storm winds or snow. A call to local emergency services should deal with urgent life-threatening situations, but residents should anticipate delays of several days before getting help from arborists or home repairers, who are likely to be inundated with anxious calls.

3. Tree First Aid: A resident may need to deal with hanging branches. Releasing those branches is challenging for most amateurs, and ladders should be used only by those who are physically able and appropriately assisted. Similarly, chain saws can be lethal in inexperienced hands. It may be prudent to put up with unsightly hanging branches until professional help is available. Check the Township’s web site for the date of the next scheduled yard waste pickup. Meanwhile, don’t block street drains with twigs and leaves.

4. Avoid Scam Artists: There is always the potential for scam artists to try to take advantage of residents who have sustained storm damage. Check an individual who comes to the door for qualifications, insurance, and references from neighbors. It is wise to ask for a written estimate or contract. Remember, “Anything you do in a hurry usually costs more !”

5. Reducing Future Storm Damage: A month or two after a damaging storm, residents should check for latent tree damage or decay that could be a hazard in a future storm. Dead or cracked branches should be removed. Exposed roots on one side of a leaning tree could indicate the potential for it to fall with storm-strength winds or heavy, wet snow. Schedule a consultation with an arborist if your diagnosis leaves you uncertain. Be aware that trees are living, complex organisms. Treating them well promotes health and longevity and they will reward your tender care.
