In Town

Pirate Marching Band invites eighth grade students from Grover Middle School and High School South students to a workshop featuring information about marching band. The event on Saturday, Februaray 4, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, at South, includes breakfast, an ice breaker, information, a performance of pep tunes, and a discussion time in instrumental sections. Plainsboro Township reminds residents that animal renewals were due on January 31. Rabies vaccination immunity must extend through at least 10 months of the 12-month licensing period. If the animal cannot be vaccinated for a medical reason bring a completed VPH-23 form signed by a veterinarian. $16.20 for non-neutered animals; and $13.20 for neutered animals. The fee increases by $5 each month it is late.

Theater Arts

Pierrot Productions has auditions for “Company” on Sunday, February 5, at 1 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, February 7 and 8, at 7 p.m. Performances will be at Kelsey Theater weekends, May 18 to June 3. Applicants should come prepared with an upbeat song from any musical theater work, and a 1 to 3 minute comic monologue. E-mail auditions@pierrotproductions.org for information or an appointment. The company is also seeking two stage crew members for “Company” and “Death of a Salesman” (weekends, February 24 to March 4). Crew members will need to be available for rehearsals beginning a week before opening night of each show. It’s an opportunity to be involved with the production of shows on a behind-the-scenes basis, with the added chance to get to know the production organization for possible future onstage or backstage assignments. McCarter Theater has auditions for boys and girls, ages 7 to 13, for “Are You There, McPhee?” Both the boy and girl characters speak using adult language and handle mature subject matter. Children will be screened and measured on Monday, February 13, from 4 to 8 p.m. (by appointment only). McCarter Theater is accepting applications for its internship program from August to June, 2013. Internships are available in business office, company and general management, company store, costume and wardrobe, development, directing and producing, education stage management, education teaching artist, house management, literary management, marketing and special events, producing and casting, stage management, and theater management.

The full-time, full-season residencies are designed for those who have finished their undergraduate or graduate work. A weekly stipend of $75 is provided and limited housing is available. Umpire Training

Little League Umpire Training is offered to parents who want to officiate Little League baseball and softball games. Four-session courses begin in February in West Windsor and Hamilton with an exam and an on-field practical at the end. Tennis

South Brunswick Community Education offers indoor tennis lessons for adults at the Winning Touch Tennis Courts behind the Princeton Marriott on College Road East, Plainsboro. Lessons include one hour on stroke work and drills and one-half hour on game strategy. Players work in small groups based on their ability level. All levels are welcome. For the Young

Voices Chorale invites children ages 5 to 12 to compose a piece of music with a vocal element for a soloist or choral ensemble, either unaccompanied or with instrumental accompaniment. The music can be written down in any kind of notation. Parents, piano teachers, and music teachers may support, but not edit, the child’s composition, as children hear things in their own imaginations differently from adults.

Submit a recording and three written copies of the child’s music (with the child’s name and age, assisting adult’s name, phone number, address, and child’s background in music), together with a check for $12 to VOICES Composition Contest, Box 404, Pennington 08534. Deadline is Thursday, March 1. The contest will culminate in a Young Composer Concert on April 17, at 7 p.m., at Music Together in Hopewell. Department of Human Services’ Division of Family Development is holding its annual Teen Media contest for all New Jersey middle and high school students. This year’s challenge to tweens and teens is to depict a unique quality in your parent(s) that you see in yourself and hope to pass on to your children. Students’ hand-drawn submissions should illustrate a positive or inspiring quality. Entries must be postmarked by Friday, March 30. Winners receive U.S. Savings Bonds and certificates of achievement during a springtime awards ceremony. Roebling Museum invites young girls in the 6th grade through high school to the museum for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day on Saturday, February 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. As part of National Engineering Week, participants will see the museum’s exhibits about Roebling engineering accomplishments including the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, completed by Emily Warren Roebling in 1883.

Professional women engineers from private firms, Rowan University, and students from the Society of Women Engineers will speak to participants focusing on education and career paths for women in the engineering field. Crisis Ministry is planning the eighth annual Valentines for Food drive on behalf of people in Mercer County who rely on the nonprofit organization for access to high-quality food. Last year’s program broke records with 11.7 tons of food collected and $19,200 donated. Food and donation drives by school and church groups will take place throughout Mercer County. Breast Cancer Resource Center of the YWCA Princeton challenges women to each raise $100 in 100 days to help the center support local women affected by breast cancer. The 100 Women, 100 Ways, 100 Days Challenge runs from Saturday, February 4, to Sunday, May 13 (Mother’s Day). The goal is to raise $10,000 to support center’s free programs and services to help women live with, through, and beyond breast cancer. Challenge participants can raise funds with a cocktail party, brunch, wine and cheese event, walk dogs, coordinate a talent show, or host a bake sale. Feel free to pledge to give up Facebook or Twitter for 100 days, stop smoking, or shave your head in exchange for donations from family and friends. It is also feasible to ask 10 people for $10 or write a check yourself. Call for Art

Delaware River Mill Society seeks entries to the New Jersey State History Fair art exhibit featuring New Jersey’s Historic Heritage at Prallsville Mills, Stockton, from Saturday, April 14 to Saturday, April 28. Awarded works will be exhibited at the fair on Saturday, May 12, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Washington Crossing State Park in Titusville.

All entries must feature a New Jersey historic site or landscape (historic house, structure, lighthouse, battlefield, or village) that provides public access. Historic sites administered by non-profit organizations or local, county, state, and federal governments are eligible. Volunteer

D&R Greenway Land Trust is assembling a corps of volunteers to do conservation work on Thursday mornings, at St. Michael’s Farm Preserve. Tasks will include physical, social, and trail work; invasive species control, and working at the farm’s native seed project. Communiversity Festival of the Arts, the town-gown event in Princeton, has a call for artists, crafters, vendors, performers, and sponsors. New Jersey League of Municipalities offers three $1,000 scholarships through the Louis Bay 2nd Future Municipal Leaders scholarship competition. The statewide contest for high school juniors and seniors centers on the theme “What My Mayor and Government Body Do Best.” Complete the application and essay and return them to your hometown mayor’s office. One semi-finalist will be selected from each community and their essay will be reviewed by the scholarship committee who will choose 15 finalists and three winners.
