Wrestling

North (3-16) Austin Scharfstein fell to his opponent from South Brunswick in a major decision, 14-1, in the Region V tournament on February 25.

An eighth place finish, with 34 points, at the District 20 tournament on February 19. Austin Scharfstein finished third individually in the 171 weight class. He has secured a spot in the Region 5 competition.

South (1-14) A ninth place finish, with 20.5 points, at the District 20 tournament on Feb. 19.

Boys’ Fencing

North (14-1) A win against Montgomery, 15-12, on February 24. A win for the sabre squad (6-3): Kevin Dwyer went 2-1; Victor Wu went 2-1; Michael Zhuang went 2-1. Foil (4-5): Robert Goldhirsch went 3-0; Alex Huang went 1-1. A win for the epee squad (5-4): Wilson Kwok went 3-0; Vivek Jaishankar went 2-0.

South (1-8) The boys sabre squad of Steven Yang, Sam Lorenz, and Brandon Wang placed 11th at the NJIAA/Bollinger Squad State Championships on February 26. Steven Yang placed first among A-strip sabre fencers.

Girls’ Fencing

North (9-3) A loss to Montgomery, 14-3, on February 24. A win for the sabre squad (8-1): Emily Wu went 3-0; Daphne Ye went 3-0; Elysia Wang went 2-1. Foil: Katherine Wang went 2-1. Epee: Mounica Paturu went 2-1. Tejasvi Gowda went 1-2.

A win against South, 14-13, on February 22. Sabre (4-5): Elysia Wang went 2-1; Emily Wu went 1-2; Daphne Ye went 1-2. Foil (4-5): Selena Park went 2-1; Angel Sun went 1-2; Katherine Wang went 1-2. A win for the epee squad (6-3): Mounica Paturu went 3-0; Meena Chandrasekar went 2-0; Tejasvi Gowda went 1-1.

South (4-4) The girls foil squad of Sharon Gao, Becky Shi, and Kristen Kemnitzer took home the silver medal at the NJSIAA/ Bollinger Squad State Championships on February 26. They had a total of 35 wins. Gao placed first amongst A-strip fencers, and Kemnitzer went undefeated, placing first amongst C-strip fencers.

Boys’ Track

North Rebounding from foot surgery and after having missed the entire season, Joe Rosa returned to action on February 26, placing second at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions with a time of 4:17.36 in the 1,600. Greg Caldwell placed sixth in the 55 Hurdles with a 7.66.

South Zach Rosenberg placed fifth in the 55 Dash, with a 6.58, at the Meet of Champions on February 26.

Girls’ Track

North Patrycia Dziekonska placed sixth in the 55 hurdles, with a 8.49 at the Meet of Champions on February 26.

South Caroline Kellner finished third in the 3,200 at the Meet of Champions, with a time of 10:44.11 — an all-time Mercer County record — on February 26. Mariame Fadiga placed fifth in the shot put, with a 38-9 toss. Emily Mauro placed sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:17.83. Ashleigh Delemos placed seventh in the 55 hurdles with with an 8.50.

A first place finish at the NJSIAA Group III Championship on February 19 at the Bennett Center in Toms River with a win over Winslow Township, 46-44. 800 Meters: 1.) Emily Mauro, 2:19.52 (personal best). 3,200: 1.) Caroline Kellner, 10:53.6 (season best). 400: 5.) Mauro, 58.97 (personal record). Relay: 4.) South (Mauro, Ingrid Simon, Ashleigh Delemos, Dahlia Amade). 1,600: 2.) Kellner, 5:07.43.

Sports Briefs

Kate Winters, a South graduate, a senior on the Rowan women’s team, was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week. She holds the school record in the 200 backstroke, with a time of 2:08.12 and the 400 IM, with a time of 4:36.82.

Austin Witter, a South graduate, had three key rebounds in the North Carolina A&T men’s basketball team’s win over Hampton.

South graduate Alex Prieto, a freshman on the Bucknell men’s track and field team, was named the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Week in January. Prieto earned a pair of top-five finishes in the horizontal jumps at the Gulden Relays on January 8. He placed fourth in the long jump with a career-best 21-2 3/4. He later took fifth in the triple jump where his mark of 44-10 was also a personal best. His performance in the triple jump was the best by a Bison at the Gulden Relays.

West Windsor resident Jack McIntyre, 12, placed third in the 200 breast (2:38.58) and 400 IM (4:53.68), fourth in the 400 free (5:25.12) and 200 fly (2:21.87) and fifth in the 100 fly (1:04.61) at the 24th Annual Holiday Classic Meet between December 10-12 at Rutgers. McIntyre also won sixth in the 200 IM (2:20.60) and eighth in the 200 free (2:05.12).

At the TYR Winterfest on January 8 and 9, held at the Sonny Werblin Aquatic Center at Rutgers, McIntyre also placed third in the 200 IM (2:20.63); fourth in the 100 free (57.86); and fifth in the 100 breast (1:15.01) and 200 free (2:05.49). He also placed sixth in the 100 IM (1:07.11).

In the 11-12 age group at the Jersey Wahoos Sweetheart Short Course Yards Meet last month, McIntyre placed first in the 200 free (2:02.39); and second in the 100 IM (1:05.79), 100 free (57.16), and 50 breast (35.58). McIntyre also won third in the 200 fly (2:19.63). McIntyre swims for Eastern Express swim team.

West Windsor resident Faith Rogers placed third in the 200 IM (2:28.12) and 100 fly (1:06.91) and fifth in the 100 back (1:05.61) at the TYR Winterfest on January 8 and 9, held at the Sonny Werblin Aquatic Center at Rutgers. Rogers swims for the Eastern Express swim team.

Rogers also placed first in the 100 IM (1:07.48) and 100 free (59.68) placed third in the 500 free (5:54.91) at the Jersey Wahoos Sweetheard Short Course Yards Meet last month. Rogers also placed fifth in the 100 breast (1:20.99); seventh in the 400 IM (5:17.81); and eighth in the 200 free (2:11.19). She swims for the Eastern Express wim team.

West Windsor resident Isabelle Peel placed third in the 100 back (1:20.65), fourth in the 200 IM (2:59.89), and fifth in the 100 IM (1:20.80) and 100 breast (1:32.31) at the Princeton Invitational on January 15 and 16. Peel also placed seventh in the 100 fly (1:26.73) and eighth in the 100 free (1:12.56).

Peel also placed sixth in the 500 free (7:17.02) and seventh in the 50 breast (41.18) in the 10 and under group at the Jersey Wahoos Sweetheart Short Course Yards meet last month. She also placed third in the 100 back (1:20.65); fourth in the 200 IM (2:59.89); and fifth in the 100 IM (1:20.80) and 100 breast (1:32.31) at the Princeton Invite last month. She also placed seventh in the 100 fly (1:26.73) and eighth in the 100 free (1:12.56). Peel swims for the Eastern Express swim team.

West Windsor resident Roman Horoszewski, 13, placed fourth in the 1650 free (17:54.31) and fifth in the 1000 free (10:50.77) at Scarlet Aquatic Club’s “Tyr” Winterfest Short Course Invitational on January 8 and 9. West Windsor resident Rabia Syed placed third in the 500 free (5:25.87) at the event.

At the Jersey Wahoos Sweetheart Meet last month, Syed won the 100 fly (1:03.22) and placed second in the 50 free (26.56) and 4th in the 500 free (5:26.20). At the same event, Horoszewski placed third in the 50 free (25.58). Both swim for the Peddie Aquatics Association.

West Windsor resident Sara Atilgan won the 25 free (20.89) and the 25 breast (30.95) in the 6 & under age group at the 2010 Snowball Mini-Meet in Princeton on January 16. She also placed third in the 25 back (24.76). In the same age group, West Windsor resident Scott Nahoum placed first in the 25 breast (29.17) and third in the 25 back (26.75), and West Windsor resident Michelle Li finished third in the 25 free (22.39) and 4th in the 25 back (25.60).

At the Treasure Chest Mini Meet at Fort Dix last month, Atilgan won the 50 free (45.82), wile Nahoum placed third in both the 25 free (22.04) and the 25 back (25.34). Plainsboro resident Katie Kudela placed second in the 25 free (35.55) and the 25 back (38.37).

Atilgan, Nahoum, Li, and Kudela all swim for the Peddie Aquatics Association team.

Princeton Junction resident Madison Wiston placed second in the 25 breast (25.93) at the Treasure Chest Mini Meet at Fort Dix last month. West Windsor resident Ashley Agogliati also swam at the event, where she placed third in the 25 fly (23.56). Both swim for the Peddie Aquatics Association team.

The Princeton Youth Hockey Tigers Bantam A Black Team took home the championship trophy over President’s Day weekend at the Congressional Cup Tournament in Washington D.C. The Tigers went undefeated in the tournament. In the final game, the Tigers came from behind, down 4-1 against the Virginia Wild, to win the championship game with a final score of 7-5. West Windsor residents Sam Engel and Jonathan Matthews are on the team.

Exclusive Agreement. The West Windsor-Plainsboro Soccer Association (WWPSA) has signed an agreement with Gold’s Gym of Lawrenceville, which will serve as the association’s exclusive performance training partner. The partnership will provide performance training designed to improve the soccer skills of WWPSA athletes during the spring and fall pre-season, as well as part of the summer camp session.

According to a press release, Gold’s Gym’s Performance Training Center programs are designed to improve an athlete’s performance and reduce the risk of injury while playing sports.
