Arbor Day in West Windsor
West Windsor Cub Scout Pack 66 recently performed a grounds and trail clean-up at the Ron Rogers Arboretum in West Windsor (on the corner of Clarksville Road and Route 571). Led by Cubmaster Fred Munsch, Pack 66 Cub Scouts and their parents picked up garbage, raked leaves, and cleared and lined trails to help the town prepare for West Windsor’s Arbor Day celebration, to be held on Saturday, April 30, at 10 a.m.
West Windsor has been re-certified as a “Tree City USA” for the 32nd consecutive year, and will be planting a tree at the Ron Rogers Arboretum that was germinated in the NASA space shuttle. West Windsor is one of 15 communities selected to receive one of the seedlings — now a 10-foot tree.
Winners of the West Windsor 2011 Arbor Day Art Contest will be recognized and rewarded. The annual contest, sponsored by the West Windsor Shade Tree Commission, is open to all students in West Windsor-Plainsboro schools. Prizes for first, second, and third places will be awarded in each of four grade categories. Students were invited to submit original art work with a theme related to trees. Winning art work will be displayed in the West Windsor Town Hall.
The celebration will also include a Mayoral Proclamation, remarks from the district school superintendent, a color guard and poetry reading by area Girl and Boy Scouts, an a cappella choral presentation by high school students, and a ceremonial tree planting in memory of former Commission member John Rosko. Current members of the Shade Tree Commission will be available to answer questions on tree planting and maintenance as well as providing a tour of the arboretum and neighboring trails.
Founders Day
in Plainsboro
Plainsboro Township’s 32nd annual Founders Day celebration will be held on Sunday, May 1. The free community celebration commemorates the incorporation of the township on May 6, 1919.
Activities begin with the parade at 12:30 p.m. beginning on Edgemere Avenue to Plainsboro Road, then continuing to the municipal complex. Featured participants include marching bands from High Schools North and South, Central Jersey Antique Auto Club, arts and cultural groups, Wicoff and Town Center PTAs, Giant Library Puppets, Plainsboro’s Town Crier, sports leagues, school clubs, community groups and organizations, and fire and rescue vehicles. There will also be a parade of international flags celebrating Plainsboro’s cultural diversity.
Following opening ceremonies at approximately 1 p.m., residents will be able to participate in a wide range of activities and enjoy live entertainment. Featured performers include Give & Take Jugglers, Mad Science, Zumba performance, high school bands, martial arts demonstrations, and cultural performances. Games for children of all ages, crafts, environmental activities, and food concessions will be available. Amusements for children include a superslide, radical run, moon bounce, and trackless train; older attendees can enjoy giant lawn chess, sports activities, meteor moon shot, and an inflatable rock wall. Event festivities conclude at 5 p.m.
Founders Day parking will be at Enterprise Drive. Police will be directing traffic and road closings and detours will be in effect until 5:15 p.m. The event will be postponed only if it is raining in the morning and forecasted to continue all day.
