Hairstyles from around the world are appearing on Witherspoon Street thanks to Godfrey Fitzgerald, owner of Godfrey Fitzgerald salon in Princeton.
From his training at the Vidal Sassoon Salon in London, to his experience as a guest stylist in places throughout Europe and the Far East, the Somerset resident is bringing cutting edge hair styles and luxury service to the Mercer County area. Fitzgerald uses the haute couture and avant-garde runway styles he creates to inspire salon-versions for his more local customers.
“In places like Europe, China and Japan, they are all about forward thinking and innovation,” Fitzgerald said. “We look to bring that back here.”
Fitzgerald has worked alongside business partner, longtime friend and gourmet chef Sintelle Taylor for the past four and a half years to create an experience filled with grandeur at his Salon. The pair have combined their crafts—cooking and hairstyling—to mirror the high-end salons they’ve visited throughout their travels abroad, which pay attention to luxury services.
Taylor provides the gourmet dining—with a menu that includes steak, lobster, soups and salads—while Fitzgerald provides the latest techniques in cutting, coloring and styling.
Clients have come to rely on his expertise in styling as well as Taylor’s hospitality, Fitzgerald said.
That aspect is especially important in meeting the needs of his international clientele, who come from places as far as London and Paris to get their hair cut in the Princeton salon, he said.
“An important notion at Godfrey Fitzgerald Salon is to emphasize the service and treatment aspect,” Taylor said.
Fitzgerald takes an artistic approach to his craft. He said he views hair as fabric, comparing the different properties between silk and cotton to the differences between hair types among his customers. That philosophy lent a hand in the creation of his own product line, Godfrey Fitzgerald.
“Hair is a medium to be worked with. I color, sculpt and create styles,” he said. “There are so many types and textures of hair and most products are meant to be used universally. They don’t meet the needs of the individual but are marketed to the masses.”
After four years of working with chemists, Fitzgerald said he was able to create a product line where each individual product is specialized to work with different hair types. The line launched in May and is available exclusively in the salon.
Godfrey Fitzgerald salon brings an international presence to Princeton, allowing customers the chance to experience European style and service along with a taste of gourmet cuisine. Taylor said she and Fitzgerald are both committed to giving all of their customers an experience they are more than worthy of.
