I think the Mercer County and West Windsor Township officials have completely lost their minds [with respect to the plans to replace the bridge over the Assunpink Creek on Old Trenton Road — The News, July 22].
Build a new bridge next to the old one that spans the creek at Old Trenton Road and keep the road open. It would take only a few more feet of precious wetlands to do this. What trees are growing on the south side of the road are just “junk trees.” This would not impact the older homes on the north side of the road. When the new bridge is finished, demolish the old bridge.
Officials have no idea how much havoc the traffic will cause on other smaller roads around the detour. Think about the drivers sitting in long lines of traffic, and having to do so for months; don’t think so much about the wildlife in the 10 feet of land it may take, whose “sensitive times of the year” will interrupt the work schedule.
I know the design for the new bridge is probably all done, so just move it over next to the old bridge. Keep the road open while the new bridge is built.
