The West Windsor Environmental Commission wants New Jersey to continue collaborating with neighboring states in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), after Governor Christie announced the state was withdrawing from the program by the end of the year.
“We want New Jersey to stay part of the solution and stay in the 10-state compact. The commission endorsed that and now the township council has it. The legislature and the state assembly have also passed resolutions,” Environmental Commission chairman Michael Hornsby said.
The commission is hoping West Windsor’s reputation as one of only four silver-level Sustainable Jersey communities can help lead a charge. It introduced a resolution that the town council passed the on August 1.
Commission member Marty Rosen, who also sits on the planning board, said the group has reached out to the New Jersey Association of Environmental Commissions (NJAEC) to encourage similar proactive resolutions in other towns as well.
