The High School South football team went into this season looking to start strong coming off a losing record last year that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time since 2005.
By winning the first two games of the year, the Pirates have done just that, rolling over Trenton, 35-0, on September 17 and handily defeating Rancocas Valley in the season opener on September 10, winning by 20 points.
South hopes to continue winning at Hightstown, for their opponent’s homecoming game, on Friday, September 23, at 7 p.m. The following week they match up against powerhouse Notre Dame in a home game on Friday, September 30, at 7 p.m.
The rout against Trenton featured strong performances by quarterback Chris Evans, who passed for two touchdowns, running back Brian Schoenauer, with 148 yards and a touchdown, and wide receiver Marty Flatley, who had 58 yards and two touchdowns.
The initial score came in the first quarter when Chris Jones scored on a 40-yard touchdown run. Flatley’s touchdowns came in the second quarter, making the score 21-0 by halftime.
In the third quarter, the Pirates scored off of a five-minute, 58-yard drive, that featured a 32-yard catch by Ryan Richards and a short touchdown run by Schoenauer.
The final score of the game came off a 44-yard drive that was capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Tom O’Connor.
The Pirates defense held Trenton to only 34 yards rushing on 35 carries and 47 passing yards.
The Pirates started the season on the winning track with a home win against Rancocas Valley, 47-27. Scoring included four touchdown passes by Evans, and two touchdowns each by running backs Pat Boyle and Schoenauer.
South took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Evans to Schoenauer. In the second quarter, Schoenauer scored again on a three-yard run to make the score 13-7 in favor of the Pirates.
Rancocas retaliated with a punt return for a touchdown. South took the lead back, 20-13, with a touchdown pass from Tom Efstathios to Ryan Richards. The contest was was tied at the half when Rancocas scored a running touchdown to make the score 20-20.
South took the lead for good in the third with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Evans to Boyle to make the score 27-20. Boyle padded the lead with a six-yard interception runback for a touchdown.
Other scoring included a 1-yard touchdown from Evans to Marty Flatley, and Efstathios with a 4-yard touchdown.
