Classics Times Two: From Sibelius to Strauss

Youth Orchestra of Central Jersey, based in Plainsboro, welcomes award winning concertmaster David Kim to the winter concert on Sunday, January 23, at 7 p.m. at High School North. Kim, a violinist, has been the concertmaster for the Philadelphia Orchestra for more than 10 years and has traveled all over the world both teaching and performing.

Founded in 1978, YOCJ is a non profit organization that brings together close to 200 instrumentalists between the ages of 9 and 18 from the New Jersey and Pennsylvania area. Their mission is to provide opportunities for talented young musicians to participate in musical performance at a level beyond that which is traditionally offered by school bands and orchestras.

Sinfonietta Nova, an orchestra based in West Windsor, presents “An Enchanting Afternoon of Strauss Operetta and Waltzes” on Saturday, January 29, at 4 p.m. at Prince of Peace Church, 177 Princeton-Hightstown Road, West Windsor. Escape the snow, wind, and ice with selections from Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, as well as two of the composer’s famous waltzes and a polka.

Gail H. Lee of West Windsor is both the artistic director and conductor. West Windsor and Plainsboro musicians include Peter Brooks and Mark Bassett on cello, Geoffrey Fleming on doublebass, and Mike Davis on percussion.

A light reception will be held following the concert. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors, and $8 for students. Children under 12 are admitted free. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.sinfoniettanova.org.
