High School South defeated High School North in a cross-town matchup in the opening round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 state tournament in Plainsboro on October 31.
The game was won when South’s Heather Deamond scored a goal past North goalie Stefanie Wisotsky in the second round of penalty kicks, breaking a scoreless tie.
When Deamond made the second of her two penalty kicks and North missed its sixth shot, it sent the 14th-seeded Pirates to a second-round match at No. 11 Manalapan. The game was expected to be played on Thursday, November 3, after the News went to press.
The upset win by the 6-8-2 Pirates ended the season for CVC Colonial champion High School North, which was the third seed among 16 teams. The team’s 13-3-1 record is the second-best record in school history.
North outshot South, 18-12, as Wisotsky made 10 stops. North goalie Caroline Brooks, playing for Joanna Gochuico, who is out with a concussion, stopped 15.
In the sudden death round, each stopped one shot as Jane Calder, Brittain Dearden, Melinda Altimore and Kayla Morrissey were on target after Deamond missed her first penalty kick. Jennifer Ibanez, Simone Counts, Alexa Kogan and Christine Nicoforo made North’s kicks.
