As tournaments heat up this winter, one that WW-P students will have their eyes on is the Mercer County Tournament for the swim teams at both high schools.
For the girls, the preliminary round of the Mercer County Tournament was scheduled for Thursday, February 4, with the finals taking place on Saturday, February 6. The boys will compete in the preliminaries on Friday, February 5. The competition takes place at Lawrence High School.
South girls are looking to repeat at county champs for the 10th straight year, following another season on top of the competition.
While the South girls, led by Meredith Ketchmark, are expected to do as well as they have in previous years, crosstown rival North seems to be catching up, having lost only to South and Princeton this season.
Earlier this year, South claimed the title at the Pirate Invitational, blowing all other teams out of the water with a 333-point performance. South won 10 of 11 events, with second-place Pennsbury not even close.
North’s Kelly Covey will be defending her title in the 50 freestyle, and she will have plenty of help from her teammates, including Connie Zhang, Katrina Chen, and Christine McCarthy looking to help lift North in the meet.
Diving. The swimmers aren’t the only WW-P athletes making a splash in the county tournaments this season. South’s Colin Hall took home the title at the Mercer County Diving Championships on February 3, with a score of 206, while the South girls’ divers claimed all the top spots except for first place. Danielle Erickson, second, finished with a score of 188.65, followed by Alice Eltvedt, third, with a 181.15, Louise Eltvedt, fourth, with a 165.10, Nicole Giambagno, fifth, with a 125.75, and Victoria Gras, sixth, with a 107.35.
