Before they hit Ocean Grove, they’re first hitting the open sea. High School South choirs present excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan`s “The Pirates of Penzance” on Sunday, April 11, at the eighth annual silent auction and dessert concert. Proceeds benefit choirs from High School South, Community Middle School, and Millstone Upper Elementary School to perform “Carmina Burana” at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove on Saturday, May 22.
The popular comic operetta features a rollicking band of pirates, a bevy of giggling maidens, their “very model of a modern major-general” father, along with a dashing pirate apprentice, a fading nursemaid, and a bunch of blundering policemen.
Heading the cast is Glenn Harris as the Major-General with Mene Ukueberwa as the Pirate King. Ariel Cohen sings the role of the General’s daughter Mabel while Roy Bhame appears as the pirate apprentice Frederic in love with her. Ruth, Frederic’s former nursemaid, is played by Kelly Davidson, and Alex Sandberg as the Sergeant of Police reminds us that “a policeman’s lot is not a happy one.”
The event also includes a silent auction with items including tickets to area events, gourmet food items, gift certificates, electronics, and sport paraphernalia. For more information, contact choir director Janice Chapin at janice.chapin@ww-p.org.
