Sports Trivia with Sportscaster Dan Brady

It is not often that an Emmy-Award winning sportswriter visits a senior citizen group but Dan Brady returns to West Windsor for two more programs. “Sports has been my passion for over 40 years,” he says. “I come from a sports household and I grew up in a sports neighborhood.” Brady played tennis and hockey competitive sports in high school and the University of Scranton, where he graduated with a bachelors in communications.

“I wanted to be a sports reporter since high school,” he says. “After several collegiate internships I received my first on-air job during my senior year.” He was a sportscaster in eight cities over a 20-year period — Scranton, Cincinnati, Sacramento, Tampa, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Denver. He also worked at NBC 10 in Philadelphia from 1997 to 1999.

Over the years he earned two regional Emmy awards. “I’m not sure if television is in my future,” he says. “I had a wonderful run.”

Since his departure from the television business he has coached tennis at two different schools (Princeton Day School and Roselle Catholic High School), was a tennis teaching professional at Hopewell Valley Tennis Club, and hosted an Internet television program (that received publicity from sportsillustrated.com and from the New York Post). He has developed a website, is an active blogger, and an entertaining and resourceful speaker. A Hamilton resident, Brady is a substitute teacher in Hamilton and Bordentown.

The series of quizzes is the highlight of the program and usually provides healthy competition. The multiple choice or fill in the blank questions are challenging — but not impossible.

Quiz samples from the April meeting in Princeton include:

Bobby Thomson’s pennant-clinching home run in 1951 is known as the: A. “The Shot Heard ’Round The World” B. “The Big Blast” C. “The Home Run for the Ages” D. All of the above

In 1994, Sports Illustrated named him the most influential person in sports history: A. Michael Jordan B. Howard Cosell C. Muhammad Ali D. Pete Rozelle

“I still have a need to talk about sports — that is why I’m visiting senior centers,” he says. His program features a sample of his television work, a book list, and a list of the most defining moments in the history of sports. “When I ask the group if they have any topics that they want to bring to the table it usually produces some healthy dialogue,” Brady says.
