Scholarships
Morgan Leske of Plainsboro has been chosen to receive an IBM Thomas J. Watson Memorial Scholarship, a corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship. Recipients of the four-year scholarship are chosen by Educational Testing Service from among National Merit Scholarship finalists based on SAT scores, GPA, demonstrated leadership in the community, references, and an essay. Leske, a senior at Peddie School, will attend Georgetown University in the fall.
Emily A. Schuit of West Windsor received the Joe Logue Sports Writing Scholarship. As managing editor of High School North’s Knightly News she has written 46 articles for the paper. She is attending Cornell in the fall.
Science Camp
Stephanie Ku, a senior at High School South, will represent New Jersey as a delegate at the National Youth Science Camp in West Windsor. A National Honor Society student who excels in math and science, Ku has received numerous awards, and will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall. New Jersey’s two delegates were selected by a Department of Education review committee from a field of applicants who submitted an essay on the theme of why they wanted to attend the camp.
Established in 1963 as an event where students exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from academic and corporate worlds.
Swim Benefit
Daniel Druckman, a student at High School South, organized a swim-a-thon fundraiser for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The goal was to swim at least 1,500 laps to symbolize the 1,500 miles from high School South to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The students raised $3,322.50. Students involved include Ingrid Simon, Brynja Winnan, Rebecca Lewinson, Grant Lee, Sylvan Zheng, Ian Dixon-Anderson, Evan Hackett, Jocelyn Yuen, Kim Chiu, Cori Michibata, Emily Schroeder, Amani Saeed, Karen Campbell, Cathy Yin, Keri Ketchmark, Sun Moon Kim, Tyler Jaffe, Allison Frullo, Riddhima Kapoor, Adam Druckman, Kevin Welsh, Meredith Ketchmark, Annie Bonazzi, Tara Nelson, and Josh Cohen.
Musical Notes
West Windsor-Plainsboro music department present a gala concert at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, on Saturday, May 22, at 4 p.m. The combined choirs from High School’s North and South, the fifth grade choirs from Village and Millstone schools, and the South Philharmonia Orchestra perform. Three string orchestras of South combine to present Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence” and the Phiharmonia Orchestra presents the 1812 Overture. Tickets are $10. Art Benefit
Kathleen Liao of West Windsor has an art exhibit with sale to benefit United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation in honor of West Windsor resident Sarah Ward, a third grader at Maurice Hawk Elementary School. “Pastels and Photography” is on view at Twist, 84 Nassau Street, Princeton, through June 30.
In College
Fairleigh Dickinson University: Meha Sheth of Plainsboro presented her research, “The Effect of Triclosan Concentration and Exposure Time on Specific Antibiotic Resistance in E. Coli Strains K-12 and ATCC 25922 in TSB or River Water,” at Fairleigh Dickinson University at Florham. Her mentor is June Middleton, a faculty member with the biological and allied health sciences department at the school. A dinner was given for students, faculty, parents, and friends in Lenfell Hall, Hennessy Hall, the former Vanderbilt-Twombly mansion located on the campus.
Bravo
Paul von Autenried Jr. of West Windsor received the first West Windsor Plainsboro award at Bravura Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual Young Artists Concerto Competition. A sophomore at High School South, von Autenried, 16, also received a grand prize. In September he will perform the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 as a soloist with the orchestra in its season opening concert
Von Autenried is a three-time first place winner in the New Jersey Music Teachers Association Young Musician’s Competition. He won the New Jersey Music Teachers National Association Competition, representing New Jersey in the Eastern Division, where he received second prize. He was a two-time first-prize winner in the Steinway Scholarship Competition, and received a distinction rating in the Diploma from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. He was also a semi-finalist in the International Institute of Young Musicians Piano Competition in Lawrence, Kansas.
Von Autenried has performed as a soloist with the Manalapan Battleground Symphony and Shanghai Musicians Chamber Orchestra at the Grand Theater in Shanghai. He has also performed at the Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall.
Literati
Aspiring high school writers and artists are featured in Mercer College’s “Aspirations 2010,” an annual publication for young writers and artists. Eighty-seven writers and 23 artists, a number with multiple submissions, were selected from 12 area high schools.
High School North students whose work is featured include Zeeshan Anwar, Neil Bedi, Sonali Chanchani, Byron Chiu, Casey Dalrymple, Olivia Hu, Brian Hui, Michael Hui, Alana Jorgensen, Laura Kosar, Jessica Li, Lilly Lu, Ingrid Ma, Adam Niemann, Aneesha Raghunathan, Renuka Reddy, Shayla Reid, Usmani Saima, Megha Sharma, Cassandra Vasiliu, Naeha Vora, Will Whipple, and Daphne Ye.
High School South students who are featured include Victoria Chho, Raisha Friedman, Katie Rose, and Meena Selvanathan.
The Arts Council of Princeton has selected youth works for “UnderAGE: An Anthology of Poetry, Prose and Artwork by Students in Grades K through 12”. The annual magazine encourages children to express themselves through the literary and visual arts.
Millstone River students include Mia Barkenbush, Nicholas Leung, Nisha Sukumar, Pranjal Singh, and Shivangi Sogani. Village School students include Anchala Rao, Ben Browndorf, Nora Peachin, Sammy Liao, Scott Gelb, +and Sonali Mohnani. Maurice Hawk student Arya Sasne also had a work published.
