Girls Basketball

North (12-16): A loss to Neptune, 64-27, on March 5 in the state tournament. Forsell: 1-2-4; Davis: 1-0-2; Moore: 2-0-4; Egan: 1-0-2; Pyfrom: 1-1-3; Hahn: 3-2-8; Tang: 2-0-4.

Ice Hockey

North (19-6-1): A loss to Ridge, 10-0, on March 8 in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. North took 13 shots. James Komianos had 28 saves.

A win against Clifton, 3-2, on March 5 in the second round of the state tournament. Goals: Andrew Washuta, Strober, Raziano. Assists: Martin; Litwack: 2; Harrison Washuta; S. Kolber. North took 15 shots. James Komianos had 23 saves.

Girls’ Swimming

South Rebecca Lewinson claimed the gold in the 100-yard breaststroke at the NJSIAA individual state championships on March 8, with a time of 1:04.51 — for the third time in a row. Cori Michibaa, Lewinson, Jocelyn Yuen, and Brynja Winnan finished second in the 200-yard medley relay, with a time of 1:47.33. Mereditch Ketchmark, Winnan, Yuen, and Lewinson placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:36.33. Lewinson also finished 14th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:13.53. Ketchmark took seventh place, with a time of 53.50, in the 100-yard freestyle, and 13th in the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 1:56.06. Yuen finished 10th in the butterfly, and Michibata finished 11th in the backstroke.

Boys’ Winter Track

North The boys’ relay mile team broke the national record at the Nike Nationals at the Reggie Lewis Center on March 14. The relay team finished with a time of 17:21.58, which broke the record of 17:25.98 set in 2004. The relay team consisted of Ryan Sleeper, who ran for 4:25.2; Tyler Corkedale, who ran for 4:22.3; Joe Rose, who ran for 4:16.5; and Jim Rosa, who ran for 4:17.5.

Boys Fencing

North. Joe Behnke (epee) finished 10th, and Hamad Masood (boys epee) finished 15th at the Individual State Championships on March 14. Both qualified for the individual championships.

South. Stephen Yang placed 8th, 2-6 (-15), in Sabre at the NJSIAA/Bollinger individual championships on March 14.

Girls Fencing

North. Anjali Baliga placed first in the Individual State Championships on March 14. Gentley Smith (sabre) finished 14th. After the final pool, Balige was 6-2, and had to face a three-way fence off. She won her bouts and took home the gold.

Sports Briefs

High School South senior Austin Witter, a member of the boys’ basketball team was chosen as the Colonial Valley Conference’s coaches’ Player of the Year, while South boys’ basketball coach Bob Schurtz was chosen as the CVC Coach of the Year.

Courtney Carnavale, a senior at High School North, was given a Colonial Valley Conference Courage Award on February 27 during the Mercer County Tournament basketball finals. She was diagnosed with Graves Disease, but still has played soccer and softball for the Knights for the past four years.

Ellen Cava, a senior at Maritim College and a member of the women’s crew team there, was on the women’s novice four who had a first place finish at the Frostbite Regatta last month. They finished with a time of 8:54.07, more than 46 seconds ahead of the second place team.

Plainsboro resident Jimmy Merrow, a sophomore on the SUNY Canton’s ice hockey team has logged a team-leading 928 minutes in goal and is 13-2 with a 2.84 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage.

West Windsor resident Theresa Burek, a member of the Monmouth University field hockey team was honored on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad. The squad recognizes student-athletes who have a cheived a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2008-09 academic year.

Plainsboro resident Tia Williams earned Morgan State four points with her fifth-place finish in the shot put during the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Championships last month. She had a toss of 44-04.00.

Matt Davidson, a West Windsor resident and 1999 graduate of West Windsor-Plainsboro High School, shot a 6-under-par 73-70-68-71—282 to finish tied for 35th at the Gateway Tour Beach Winter Series golf tournament in Queen Creek, Arizona. He qualified for the tour’s Winter Series Championship. He finished the Beach Winter Series with a rank of 23.
