While there have been some improvements around the train station area in the township, the West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance has again come to the township with three specific recommendations for improvements which they say are a high priority.##M:[more]##
At the council’s April 20 meeting, Susan Conlon said the group was following up with a walk it did in May, 2008, on the roads near Windsor Haven. Since that walk, sidewalk lanes have been installed on both sides of Winthrop Way at Vaughn Drive and Alexander Road, where striped crosswalks and flashing pedestrian lights.
However, Dan Damon, a resident in Windsor Haven and also a member of the WWBPA, pointed out that the crosswalk near Windsor Havens and Princeton Junction Estates is located immediately before the end of a speed zone on Bear Brook Road, in which the speed limit changes from 35 to 50 miles per hour directly before motorists come upon the crosswalk, meaning they speed up, even though there is a crosswalk. He asked the council to consider lowering the speed limit to 35 miles per hour for the road’s entirety.
At Alexander Road and Vaughn Drive, improvements that have recently been made at the intersection are helping, Damon said. The crosswalk now features a countdown, which allows pedestrians to get across the street in 13 seconds. The township also installed a No Turn on Red sign, but motorists cannot see it because it is obstructed by another sign, Damon said.
In other news, the WWBPA is encouraging everyone to use a bicycle this month, National Bike Month. The WWBPA is urging residents to E-mail the alliance with their bike commuting mileage every week during May.
The alliance is also encouraging residents to attend the annual BikeFest, which will be held at Community Park at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 23. The WWBPA will also host a table at the West Windsor Farmer’s Market’s opening day on Saturday, May 16.
