The West Windsor Township Council is sending a message to the Dreher Group — it wants the vacant buildings on the site of the future Rite Aid at the corner of Route 571 and Cranbury Road to be torn down and the eyesore of the property lining the gateway into the township to be dealt with ASAP.
Despite cleanup work on the property earlier this month, Council President Charles Morgan said he wanted Dreher to tear down the building on site and that if it cannot be done now, the township should work out a deal in which the township will take care of the demolition, but be reimbursed by the developer. The council has sent a letter asking for demolition within a certain time limit. If there is no ground broken by the end of 2009 on the site, the council states it wants the buildings to be demolished.
Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh says he has a meeting set up with Richard Dreher, president of the Dreher Group, which has received Planning Board approval to construct a Rite Aid on the property. The council agreed to send the letter and also wait for the mayor to report back from the meeting with Dreher before taking any further action. The site plan calls for a 14,673 square foot Rite Aid, and an additional 6,000 feet of retail space that could include a coffee shop and a restaurant.
