Chris Perez of Boy Scout Troop 40 organized a naturalization project to plant 1,000 daffodil bulbs in the Ron Rogers Arboretum in the fall of 2008. The project, which required 200 hours of planning, directing, and production, had 50 volunteers participating.
Naturalization, the effect an organism has on an area of land when it has multiplied by natural regeneration and spread throughout the new environment, is to introduce a new species, and eventually create a very natural, meadow-like space. Daffodils, grown from bulbs, will continue to divide and create more plants. As a result of this project, each spring the arboretum will be filled with thousands of wild daffodils.
“Thank you to all who volunteered their time and effort on the project” said Perez. “Boy Scouting has given me an appreciation of the importance of community service. This project provided me with a wonderful learning experience, and the opportunity to give something back to my town which has done so much for me.”
