A 14th place finish overall in the state at the Santelli Tournament at Voorhees High School on January 5. The epee squad placed 10th; the foil squad placed 20th; and the sabre swuad placed 21st, for the overall 14th place finish. Epee went 4-2 in the first round and 5-2 in the second round. Foil went 3-3 in the first round and 3-3 in the second round. Sabre went 4-2 in the first round. In the second round, the sabre squad was 1-5 (15-14, 15-13, 15-14 and 15-11).

South (6-0) A win over Notre Dame, 93-77, on January 5. Joey Grant, Mike Prewitt, Ilya Grabinlkov, and Dan Druckman finished first in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:44.42. Grant also finished first in the 200 free (1:52.43), 200 IM (2:06.54), and 100 Free (50.22). Grant, Prewitt, Alex Huang, and Kevin Welsh finished first in the 200 Free relay. Druckman took first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.44 and the 500 Free with a time of 5:08.36.

South A win over Notre Dame, 108-62, on January 5. Meredith Ketchmark finished first in the 200 and 100 freestyles. Ketchmark and Cori Michibati, Rebecca Lewinson, and Brynja Winnan also finished first in the 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:51.48. Lewinson placed first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.15 and in the 100 breast, with a time of 1:08.57. Winnan placed first in the 50 free with a time of 25.11.
Diving
North (0-4) A loss to South and Montgomery, with a score of 24, at a tri-meet on December 18. For the girls, Christina LiPuma qualified for the state meet. LiPuma placed second at the meet, with a score of 181.6. Alaina Wezel placed 9th with a score of 125.15. Melanie Weiskopf placed 12th with a score of 110.85.
South (4-0) A win against Montgomery and North with a score of 66 on December 18. For the girls, Danielle Erickson finished first with a 182.05. Alice Eltvedt, who placed third at the meet with a 170.15, qualified for the state meet. Louise Eltvedt placed fifth with a score of 151.1. Alexandra Olgin placed 7th with a score of 131.95. Grace Oey was 10th with a score of 121.3, and Nicole Giambagno was 11th with a score of 119.6. For the boys, Colin Hall was third, with a score of 124.7.
Sports Briefs
High School South graduate Becky Peters, a freshman at Fordham, scored 12 points in the women’s basketball team’s 66-64 win over Central Connecticut State on December 22. She has contributed to the team’s seven wins so far this season, one which has been hailed as a turn-around for the women’s team, which ended last season at 0-29.
Peters was also named the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week two straight weeks, first on on December 29, and then again on January 5. On December 28, she recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Norfolk State. She also added a season-high six steals in that game. She followed that up on December 29 with her second consecutive double-double with a season-high 24 points and 11 rebounds and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
On December 22, Peters netted 12 points and three rebounds in a win over Central Connecticut State. She is currently the team’s second leading scorer, with 11.1 points average, and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Tory Sharpless, a senior at High School South, and a member of the girls’ basketball and field hockey teams, was a member of the Edge Gaya Team, which placed first in Pool B in the USA National Field Hockey Festival’s Under-19-Girls Division held in Indio, CA last month. The USA Field Hockey’s National Hockey Festival is the world’s largest amateaur field hockey event, with 4,”000 athletes from across the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean competing for titles in men’s and women’s divisions, which are determined by age group. During the three-day event, 225 teams competed in 732 games on 26 fields.
Brian Leung, a West Windsor resident and freshman at Princeton University, finished first in the Hamilton Hangover 5-Mile Run on January 1 with a time of 25:34.0. West Windsor residents John LiPuma and Sam Macaluso finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
Amy Gettelfinger, 13, a Princeton Junction resident and seventh grader at Grover Middle School, is a member of the Ice-Lantics Intermediate synchronized skating team, which returned last month with silver medals after its first competition of the season at the Terry Conners Synchronized Skating Classic in Stamford, CT.
Synchronized skating is the fastest growing discipline in the sport of figure skating, with more than 500 teams competing across the United States. Garden State Skating Club’s Ice-Lantics Synchronized Skating Association, a non-profit organization, was established in 1996 with 12 skaters and quickly became one of the premier teams in the country, attracting skilled skaters from all over New Jersey. This season’s Intermediate squad consists of 21 talented skaters but the organization also fields two Beginner teams of “synchro” standouts. The Intermediates will compete at United States Figure Skating’s 2009 Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships in Morristown, New Jersey in January against teams from the Eastern section of the United States. Rebecca Lewinson, who swims on the High School South girls’ swim team, competed in the Short Course Nationals in Atlanta last month. She qualified with the AAU squad, the Excel swim club, and finished the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:06.90.
Katie Winters, a High School South graduate and a sophomore and member of the Rowan University women’s swim team, finished third in the 500 freestyle at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational with a time of 5:19.94.
The West Windsor-Plainsboro Wildcars Pop Warner Pee Wee team finished as runners up for the Central Jersey Conference championship. They finished with a 10-3 record.
Laura Kuhlman, a senior at High School South and a member of the Mercer Junior Rowing Club signed a letter of intent to row for Duke University next fall, 2009.
