Plainsboro officials awarded a $13,989 contract for abatement of asbestos in the basement of the Wicoff House, to Metro Contracting of Wayne on September 23.
The work has already been completed on the building, home of the Plainsboro Museum, said Township Administrator Bob Sheehan.
Planning for future renovations, the township in August decided to hire professionals to investigate whether the building had asbestos due to the building’s age.
“The review showed that there were pipes in the basement that were wrapped with material that had asbestos,” Sheehan said. “We recently completed remediation of taking out the insulation.”
Because it was located in the basement, “it was a pretty minor contained situation,” he added.
Built in 1880, the 17-room farmhouse between Dey and Plainsboro roads was purchased by the township in 1977 to serve as a municipal building. By 1996, when it was no longer needed for that purpose, the Historical Society began restoring the building.
