North’s early success in football this season attracted a lot of attention. But it did not seem to impress South, which defeated its crosstown rival, 10-7, on a rain-soaked field on October 17.
Although the story all season has been the Knights’ Sean Reed, the Pirates were able to limit him to a season-low 34 yards. The Pirates also thwarted his attempt to break the all-time North career rushing mark of 1,827 yards. Reed needed 38 more to break the record.
The story was the opposite for the Pirates, whose leading rusher, Chris Matthews, rushed for 100 yards — nearly matching his season-long tally of 122 yards on 22 carries through the first five games. Six of those carries came during South’s opening drive, which resulted in a touchdown.
South held the Knights from scoring until the last 57 seconds, when the Knights’ Josh Harrison caught a deflected pass from Ryan Phelan and ran for a 33-yard touchdown.
With the loss, North fell to 4-2. South is at 3-3. South will be holding Homecoming celebrations on Saturday, October 24, as it hosts Nottingham at 1 p.m. North will also be at home on Saturday, October 24, against Notre Dame at 2 p.m.
