A public hearing on a bond ordinance providing funds for the second phase of a traffic calming project on Plainsboro Road will be held by Plainsboro Township Committee on Wednesday, December 9.
The township received a $1.14 million grant toward the second phase of reconstruction, which will cost a total $1.75 million. The $580,000 bond ordinance — introduced by the Committee on November 10 — will make up the difference.
Phase II of the reconstruction project will continue work performed several years ago on Plainsboro Road from Morris Davison Park up to Deer Creek Drive. The second phase of reconstruction will run from Deer Creek Drive, west on Plainsboro Road to the P-loop. Improvements include construction of an island in the middle of the roadway, enhancing pedestrian safety and crosswalks, and providing for new curbing.
The project is expected to be bid over the winter and to begin in the spring.
In other business during the November 10 meeting, the Township Committee adopted an ordinance to tighten laws pertaining to parks and recreation. The ordinance had not been updated in many years, and officials had removed language that was no longer applicable, including one provision dealing with the killing of poisonous snakes, which are not even indigenous to the area.
Changes to the peddlers and solicitors and the mobile food vendors ordinances were introduced. The changes affect mobile food vendors who come, for example, to business parks within the township to provide lunch to employees during their breaks. Under the current ordinance, those vendors were only required to get permits from the township but were not required to undergo health inspections. But under the new ordinance, they would.
The changes were prompted by an increase in the number of food vendors in the area. The public hearing on those ordinances is also scheduled for Wednesday, December 9.
