For High School South fans looking to avenge the 21-9 loss the Pirates football team suffered against North last September, the opportunity came January 4.
This time North’s ice hockey team, which was on a 7-0-2 winning streak heading into the game, seemed unstoppable. But the Pirates handed the Northern Knights a 4-2 loss to end their otherwise perfect season, with three goals in the second period.
The first time the two teams met this season, in December, the game ended in a tie. The Pirates, who are currently 7-3-3 for the season, were led to victory on January 4 by junior forward Mike Nestel, the team’s leading scorer, who had two goals, and Trent Hanafee and Will Dzugan, each with a goal.
“Going into the game, everyone was talking about North and how they were undefeated,” South Coach Brian McGurney said. “No one expected anything out of us, except us. We knew we were capable of beating them. I’m not sure anyone else felt the way we did, but coming out of the locker room, I knew what we were about to do.”
He said what impressd him most is that the team “finally put together a complete game against a good opponent, and no one quit.”
South’s win over North has boosted the team’s morale, “but we also haven’t lost sight of the fact that there is still a lot of hockey left to be played this season,” McGurney said. “The North win will mean nothing if we don’t make states or have a strong showing in the county tournament.”
He said Keegan Martell, Nestel, Dzugan, sophomore goalie Darren Stafford, Chris So, the freshman offenseman, juniors Matt Bright and Junichi Hara, have also added to the team’s success so far.
