Nuran Nabi, a Plainsboro Township committee member, has had his autobiographical book, “Born in Bengal,” with a focus on the Bangladesh liberation movement, published. Nabi, who has served on the Plainsboro Planning Board and Human Relations Committee, filled the township vacancy when Ginger Gold Schnitzer resigned.##M:[more]##
Born and raised in Bangladesh, he received undergraduate and graduate degrees biochemistry at Dhaka University, Bangladesh; and received his doctorate in cell biology from Kyushu University, Japan.
In 1980 Nabi came to the U.S. as a visiting scientist focusing on post-doctoral studies in molecular biology at New York University. He moved to New Jersey in 1984 when he became a research scientist at Colgate Palmolive Technology Center. An inventor of Colgate Total toothpaste technology, he has written more than 100 patents and publications. He recently retired from Colgate as an associate director of technology.
He met his wife, Zeenat Nabi, when they were classmates at Dhaka University. They married in 1974 and went to Japan together for graduate studies. After she received her doctorate degree in immunology she also did post-doctorate studies at NYU. She was a research faculty member at Rutgers and Princeton universities before joining Colgate in 1991.
Their son, Mushfik, was born in Bangladesh in 1980. A graduate of West Windsor-Plainsboro High School, he received a degree in economics from Rutgers University, and is working in a multinational financial company in New Jersey. Adnan, born in New Jersey in 1988, graduated from High School South, and is a sophomore at Bentley College studying marketing and finance.
Nabi’s first book, “Bullets of ‘71, A Freedom Fighter’s Story,” is available in Bengali, with the English version to be published later this year. His focus is on the Bangladesh liberation war.
He is the founder and president of Bangladesh Americans Against Terrorism, founder and director of Bangladesh American Friendship Caucus, founder and past president of the Bangladesh Society of New Jersey, and founder and past chairman of the Federation of Bangladesh Associations in North America.
