Cub Scout Pack 40, based in West Windsor, recently held its Pinewood Derby, an annual event in which scouts, with parental assistance if needed, construct a race car from a block of wood, attach axles and wheels, and decorate it. Then the cub scouts race their cars.##M:[more]##
The five fastest cars this year were created by Ryan Madsen, first place; Patrick Zeoli, second place; Kevin Kullmann, third place; Nathan Painter, fourth place; and Michael Mu, fifth place.
Speed prizes were also awarded for each of the five levels of scouts, and for siblings that entered. The results included from first to third place in each category.
Tigers: Ben Albeyta, James Tampellini, and Kevin Veno. Wolfs: Preston Heyse, Rocco Giancarli, and Daniel Joseph. Bears: Kevin Kullmann, William Hopper, and Zachary Scavo. Webelos: Patrick Zeoli, Nathan Painter, and Michael Mu. Webelos 2: Ryan Madsen, David Yaffe-Bellany, and Ian Cunningham.
Siblings, junior division winners include Sean Madsen, Katie Kullmann, and Christine Rexroad. Siblings, senior division winners include Matthew Rexroad, Julie Tampellini, Lauren McTique, and Rebecca Van Dyke.
David Van Dyke took first place for best looking car with his “Droid Attack Squad,” featured nine Lego Star Wars droids in an attack vehicle that was bristling with Lego Star Wars weapons. Matthew Warshauer took second place with his car, a ping-pong table, complete with two paddles. Matthew Bergman took third place with his car, a Rubik’s cube.
Other notable cars included a hot dog car, a Lego Star Wars Storm Trooper vehicle, a stalking Jaguar ready to pounce, a 1960s hippie bus, and an Elmo car.
“For some boys, the Pinewood Derby is the highlight of their scouting year,” says Anthony Zeoli, Cubmaster.
